Baby choking and vomiting mucus

Nia18 · 12/12/2021 19:01

My 7 month old DD has been unwell constantly for the past 3 months, but yesterday she slept almost all day. Today she has vomited thick mucus around 5 or 6 times. She chokes on it and panics and I have to pick her up and lean hold her forwards to get it up.

I'm so nervous about her sleeping tonight and choking while in bed on her back.
Shes still in my room next to my bed, but I cant help but worry.

Is there any advice on what to do about this sort of thing?

Shes is feeding but shes taking less and just wants to sleep.

I think medical advice for this one, OP.

Definitely seek medical advice. In the mean time try and keep her head elevated in her cot (a rolled up towel or cushion under one ending of the mattress should be enough) it will help stop the mucus pooling as much.

Thank you. I never know whether I'm being over the top or not.

When you say medical advice do you mean ring GP tomorrow or speak to someone tonight?

I would ring 111 tonight.
Hope she feels better soon

Mine do this when they have bronchitis. Usually they need ventolin/salbutamol to resolve it. Rinsing the nose with saline also helps.
I would also call 111 and try and see a doctor asap.
You need to keep an eye on her stomach for retractions (stomach being pulled in under the rib cage) and go to A&E if you see it.
When mine are like this they sleep with me resting their head on my shoulder to keep it elevated, which also helps.

Call 111, they may be able to book you an out of hours GP call back. I would also follow up with your GP tomorrow morning.
It’s so scary when little ones are poorly, just work on keeping her hydrated if she’s throwing up, using a calpol syringe of water can be handy if she isn’t feeding lots.

Jeez OP, please please PLEASE don’t use mumsnet for serious medical advice for a baby. They can deteriorate so quickly. Call 111 immediately and they will help you. If you’re still worried, push for further immediate assessment by a medical professional. Please don’t rely on Mumsnet!

I thought this was an advice forum?? No need to go nuts at op she is allowed to ask questions and I'm sure she's seeking appropriate medical advice.

Have you checked for tonsillitis, seems to be rife at the moment. My DD was vomiting with it last week, but yes do call 111

If it's been long term it could be a worsening situation with reflux due to something like CMPA or could be as a pp suggests a worsening chest infection/bronchitis. Either way immediate medical attention is needed to determine the cause therefore get the correct treatment. Dd at this age had constant chest infections/bouts of bronchitis after having whooping cough (another possibility btw) at 6 weeks old and having severe reflux on top so what you describe was a fairly common occurrence in the first year of her life . Difference was I knew why and could treat it

Nobody is born knowing whether it’s time to call 111 or not. It’s fine to run your thoughts by someone as OP is doing.

Advice sure, medical advice? Nope. She said she hadn’t sought any medical advice from the GP or 111 before posting either. And it’s been going on for three months, and has worsened in the past 48 hours. If that’s not time to call 111 or the GP instead of posting online to unqualified strangers, I don’t know what is. I do of course understand that sometimes it might feel like we, as parents, are worrying too much and will look silly if we “bother” medical professionals with everything…but that’s what they are there for! I really do sympathise with the OP and hope the little one is feeling lots better very soon. But I also hate it when Mumsnetters dole out medical
advice for anything that isn’t nappy rash or teething. This poor worried parent needs to speak to someone who can actually help her with either treatment solutions, or with reassurance. Not us.

It hasn’t been going on for three months. She’s been ill with undefined other things over the last three months and there’s no suggestion OP hasn’t taken her to a doctor for them. This is a new episode that has come on over the weekend, and we all know how hard it is to see a doctor then, especially at the moment

Thank you for your replies.
I hesitated last night as I have taken her to A&E twice since she first started feeling unwell and both times I've been left feeling a bit silly and as if I've wasted their time.

I called the GP this morning and got a face to face appointment. The GP was completely unconcerned and again....I felt like they thought I was 'that mum' bringing my baby in when she's perfectly fine.

Shes vomited a total of 22 times in the past 24 hours. Had 2 wet nappies.
She was alert and had no rash, o2 levels good and no temperature, so the GP swiftly got us out the door.

I have no idea whether I'm being unnecessarily concerned or not now.

Is she vomiting or spitting up?

Or coughing on the mucus to the point of vomiting? (Our son did this when he had a very bad cough.)
