Heavy periods

My daughter is 14 and since she started her period 2 years ago she has suffered massively, she is always in agony with her back and stomach to the point it hurts her to walk and is really heavy, I decided it was time to get onto the doctor although I really didn't want her to go on the pill just yet to see if there was an alternative. He has prescribed her Tranexamic acid, does anyone have any experience with this, she has read the leaflet and is scared to take due to the side effects. Any help much appreciated. Thank you, Katie. Xx

Tranexamic acid should stop the heavy bleeding but isn't a pain reliever so she may still need separate pain relief if cramping / pain continues.

My daughter was the same. Her periods started when she was 12, completely out of the blue. There was no build up to it, no discharge or anything. It just started one day, blood pouring out of her, very heavy. Periods lasting 7-21 days, sometimes only having a fortnight off and she would be back on again. She would also get terrible pms, sickness, fever, Dizziness, headaches. After 6 months of leaving it to see if it settled (it did not) I took her to the gp. She was prescribed tranexamic acid too. She was told to take it for the first 4 days of each period on a three month trial and told to wait to see if things settled as it can take a year for girls periods to fall into a rhythm.

After 3 months on the TA we saw no improvement at all so she is now on the combined pill. She takes 3 packets (63 tablets) back to back then a 4 day break. She's been on it 6 months now (she's almost 14) and things are much more manageable. She doesn't tend to bleed in her break of pills but sometimes within the packets but it is starting to even itself out and becoming closer to her pill break each time. I'm going to leave it another 6 months and see where we're at and if things stay the same and she's still bleeding during her packets then I'll be asking for a referral to gynae for investigation for endometriosis.

Had the same with 14 yr old dd. Tried allsorts, nothing worked, and she's now on the mini pill with her periods completely stopped.
She's no longer bleeding heavily, in pain and her moods have settled.
As the nurse said, being 14 is hard enough without hellish periods.
