Can CMPA suddenly come on?

My DS is 5 months old. Had an awful week of sleep last week as he kept waking up every hour to fart - generally would start to feed he’d relax quite quickly fart and back to sleep. On Sunday he had very watery poo and the passed some clear mucus with blood. Since then he’s had very frequent bright green mucus in his nappy particularly straight after or during a feed. Dr checked him and said he looked in good health but to take a stool sample - but the sample has come back with no sign of infection.

Could it be a viral thing that wouldn’t be picked up or can CMPA suddenly start at 5 months? He’s happy in himself apart from teething pain but still smiling. No vomiting or anything at all. A slight viral looking rash but nothing more. I will follow up with the Dr but just looking for others’ experiences as it’s all totally new to me.

You can get a temporary lactose intolerance after a stomach upset.

SouthOfFrance · 09/12/2021 21:25

Have you started weaning him yet?

Skyll · 09/12/2021 21:26

Yes if he’s been sick he can be lactose intolerant but it mightn’t last.

Bluesycamore · 09/12/2021 21:32

@SouthOfFrance no not started weaning yet and he’s EBF. I’ve not changed anything in my diet and have always had dairy.

Thanks everyone he’s had a runny nose that started at the same time as the very frequent green mucus nappies but nothing else I could spot other than the week of excessive wind overnight. He is very drooly but that’s definitely the teeth.

Breastmilk contains lactose so it could be a temporary intolerance. You could try colief drops to see if they help

HappyMeal564 · 09/12/2021 21:53

Mine did this at the exact same age! Dairy free now but slowly starting to introduce dairy

Bluesycamore · 09/12/2021 21:59

@HappyMeal564 did eliminating dairy solve the problem? Eep I’m so secretly hoping it’s just a short lived virus or teething I’m not sure how I’ll part with dairy (chocolate) but it seems really odd if it is a virus as there’s no other symptoms

Teething can cause these symptoms as well. Or temporary lactose intolerance as others have said - there is lactose in breastmilk (even if you go dairy free) so I'd just wait and see for now.

HappyMeal564 · 09/12/2021 23:07

It's working, he's tolerating cooked dairy so far! Going very slowly but his nappies aren't mucusy anymore!

The rash can also be a cmpa symptom. I think my son had it from very early on ( mixed fed) reflux from birth but the symptoms really ramped up around 6 weeks. His was slow weight gain/dropping centile, explosions at every change, rashes and spots, puffy eyes, reflux and very irritable after feeds. Once I cut dairy from my diet and we changed his formula he was a different baby in 8 hours! He's still currently on step one of milk ladder at 22 months, slow going x
