Blood in toddler stool

3 year old DS had a poo earlier and the bottom of the bowl was bright red. It wasn't loads but clearly visible, he even asked why his poo was all pink.

Will talk to his GP on Monday but as these things always helpfully happen at weekends I thought I'd ask if anyone has experienced this in the meantime.

He is perfectly fine in himself otherwise. The poo was normal-ish for him, it does tend to be a bit mucousy/desintegrated.

Really grateful for any thoughts!

Could it also be something other than blood? He definitely hasn't had beetroot this week but perhaps there is something else that's obvious that I'm not thinking of (I suffer from severe baby brain at the moment!)

Raspberries? Lots of strawberry jam?

Wishingitwassummer · 20/11/2021 20:38

Was it mixed in the poo? Or just in the bowl?

Jelly?
However the mention of mucous I think you should phone Gp on Monday

No we haven't eaten any of those. It wasn't mixed In the stool as far as I could tell just in the bowl.

To make things worse and sorry for TMI but I've just had blood in my stool too, in the bowl and mixed in. I am so confused.

We all took Ovex earlier this week as DS woke once one night and seemed irritated by his bottom before saying he needed a poo and I got paranoid. But from what I'm reading bleeding isn't even a rare side effect of that medication.

Argh now I am very worried about my poor boy :(. We both generally have sightly irritable bowels, he gets a lot of wind that all comes out when he poos in a bit of an explosive fashion. The poo is never diarrhea though.

I've had unusually loads of wind these last couple of weeks too but thought it was a weird post partum thing (I have a newborn).

Could it be we have a very weird virus?

With your little one perhaps he has an anal fissure? That would explain the itching and there would be another of blood when wiped.
Does he sometimes have constipation? This could cause a fissure (it’s like a small tear).
In any case, a visit to the GP is required.

Could you speak to a pharmacist over the weekend, particularly regarding the medication? Failing that maybe call 111? They'll happily tell you to just wait and call GP if that's appropriate but perhaps you'd be reassured for him to have been triaged?

Wishingitwassummer · 20/11/2021 21:20

I really don’t think it is appropriate to call 111 for reassurance. They usually have extremely long wait times that will probably cause you more stress as you will end up waiting on call back into the small hours.
As long as your little one is otherwise well, waiting until you can see your own GP would suffice. Obviously if that were to change I would call them.

Could it be pepper or cherry tomatoes?

Hairyfriend · 20/11/2021 21:26

If its bright red, its likely a small tear or haemorrhoid as it means the blood is fresh and the base of the intestinal tract. If its black and tarry, its blood from father up the intestinal tract- stomach/large intestine etc.

Had he eaten anything he shouldnt? Batteries, lego, toys etc?

Did he complain of any pain when pooing or pain around the anus that could indicate a little tear?

Do you still have the leaflet inside the ovex box? It might have anal bleeding as an uncommon side effect- especially as you are both affected.
