Is this eczema?

DS2 is nearly 8 months old and what started as a bit of dribble rash in the folds of his neck has turned into this. Took him to a walk in centre 2 days ago and the doctor there said she couldn’t tell what it was and prescribed E45 cream. Since then the rash has spread to his chest and back. He has had a temperature off and on and at times the rash on his neck has been hot to the touch.

Can’t try GP again until Monday so in the meantime, would appreciate any insight/advice as DS1 did dribble a lot but never developed into a rash so I am clueless.

It looks like an eczema rash to me, is he teething?

Elopelo · 20/11/2021 19:28

Thanks for your reply. Yes he has been teething badly for the last couple of weeks but no teeth as of yet.

Could be. DD had it quite similar. But it's that kind of non-specific thing that could be all sorts really.

If they're otherwise well then just keep up the moisturiser over the weekend and speak to the GP Monday. Or you could pop to a pharmacy tomorrow? They're very good with skin problems.

ConkerBonkers · 20/11/2021 19:42

Looks like a viral rash to me, best to focus on keeping them hydrated, and keeping their temperature down. The e45 won't harm but it won't really help either. Best to get seen by another GP.

lovelylittlesunflower · 20/11/2021 19:46

I think it is probably related to the teething, my son with eczema would rash like this during teething. The E45 could be irritating so I would consider another, like an ointment, pharmacy should be able to help.

Inthesameboatatmo · 20/11/2021 19:47

My son had similar and the gp gave me a cream to put on under his neck .
I think the two are different.
The rash is viral and the neck is a nasty case of dribble rash .both probably need different treatments

Hi all, sorry not been on sooner. Thank you for all the advice. GP got back to me and agreed that back and chest rash is a viral one and thank God it went away in a few days. The neck rash has been harder to diagnose, I haven’t been able to see a GP face to face, but have been prescribed 2 different emollients (sp?) now as well as a steroid cream which I am a bit reluctant to use given how young DS is and have heard that as soon as you stop using the steroids the rash will come back worse?

I’m going to keep an eye on it for the next few days and push for a face to face consultation.

Thanks again.

I thought it might be a viral rash...in terms of the other rash, as someone who has eczema herself I would say that you would only need to use the steroid cream once to see a big effect. If you don't notice s massive difference a day after using it, then I would say it's not working and you don't need to use it. I only use steroid cream once during a flare up, so once every month or two at month. I would recommend using steroid cream and not hydrocortisone (which some docs love but is about as effective as a chocolate tea pot in terms of properly managing a flare up plus can lead to skin thinning long term -so yes, pleased your doc doesn't advocate this) what I would do lots of, is use loads of epaderm ointment as a moisturiser. Suitable for babies, you can buy a massive pot non prescription. Also, no wool clothes, only use non bio washing powder, no fabric softener, and just do water baths, no soaps at all, until the rash is totally gone.

@Elopelo.
The steroid will be fine to use ,I did on my son. It never came back once I stopped using it.

Elopelo · 28/11/2021 12:44

Thanks again @Missdotty for your time and sharing such great tips. Really do appreciate it. The GP said she would give me a steroid cream but once I collected it it’s actually a tube of hydrocortisone cream which I assumed was a steroid as I have no prior knowledge about this but now after reading your post I think I will have to go back again to get an actual steroid? So far I’ve just been using Aveeno Dermexa balm which has made a difference and also a little bit of metanium cream which helped to dry it up in the beginning but I’m conscious this is not a long term fix as it’s been going on for a few weeks now.

@Inthesameboatatmo thanks for sharing your experience I hope your son is doing well.

He is thanks op .
I hope your little one gets over it all quickly

ConkerBonkers · 28/11/2021 17:41

Hi I would use the hydrocortisone sparingly for up to a week and if it doesn't work take him back in. I would steer well clear of aveeno as it is oat based and definitely brings me out in a crazy horrible itchy rash. Use epaderm instead. No allergens in it and totally safe for babies.
