Ear pinning (pinnaplasty) age 5

My DD5 has ears that stick out a lot. We think she's adorable and beautiful, but since the day she was born her ears have been very noticeable and 'sticky outy'. We have never discussed this with her, but on her first day at school they drew self portraits using a mirror and hers was a lovely picture.... with ENORMOUS ears. She wrote the caption 'this is me with my big ears' (well the teacher wrote it but that's what she said). We've asked the teachers if she's mentioned her ears or if other kids have and the teacher said she hadn't noticed anything but would keep an ear out (pardon the pun!!).

Since then I have looked into ear pinning and have looked at results in children her age. I think it would be beneficial for her to have them done now, before she's too old to be hurt by cruel comments from other children... I think it's inevitable really as they are very outy. I'd love her not grow up and not care what other people think of her ears, but in reality it just doesn't work like that does it.

Does anyone have any similar thoughts or experiences of getting ears pinned back in a child this age? Thank you.

I had my ears pinned back when I was 11, personally I wouldn’t want to consider it before the child is at an age to decide for themselves it is what they wanted. I don’t for a second regret having it done but I’m glad it was my choice to do so.

Could you ask her if she likes her ears and say you were just wondering because of what she had written on her pic. That will give you an idea how she feels and if it might be worth considering at this age.

I wish my parents had made that decision for me. I've always hated my ears and have never been able to wear hairstyles which would mean they are on show. If they'd pursued getting it done in childhood it probably would have been covered on the NHS but now I'd be looking at paying thousands to have it done privately and I just can't justify the cost.

Have a look at the ear fold method of ear pinning - as far as I know it's only available privately. My DDs ears stick out, but as she's grown they've sort of blended in with her head - the same happened with DH, he was teased a lot as a child, but I wouldn't say they stick out now.

It's worth asking your GP- I asked when DD was 5, but saw a locus who told me she didn't think it was possible in our area and couldn't refer. For some reason I didn't push it.

Anyway the upshot is I've always intended for DD to have the ear folds, but now she's a teen and I honestly don't think she needs them. She happily wears he hair up day.

Can anyone here recommend any surgeons at all? Our 5 yr old needs this surgery and looking at Private because we assume NHS will be a few years wait?
