Recurrent fever in 18 month old

My 18 month twin has had a fever on and off for over 6 weeks. At the start he had a running nose, and lots of phlegm which he would find difficult to vomit out. Spoke to the doctor who said to manage with calpol and that it was probably just related to the change in weather.

This was a phone consultation. After speaking to the doctor I saw he had white sores in his mouth. Took him to a pharmacist who said they looked like ulcers and because they had spread I needed to see a doctor and to call 111.

At the emergency treatment centre (where I also took his twin who had now developed a fever) we were prescribed with antibiotics for an ear infection for both. But this gave them a bad reaction, lots of vomitting tummy cramps and very watery diarrhea. Spoke to online doctor who said to stop anti biotics which I did.

Both seemed to then get better. But after about a week my son has a high fever again. I came home from work and the babysitter said he had a fever and she had given him calpol. He seemed fine, gave them some dinner and bed time he vomited up his food and developed a fever again. I've given him nurofen and he is currently sleeping, making lots of heavy breathing noises.

I have a doctors appointment tomorrow for him. I imagine he will say to manage with calpol again. Is this normal in kids? Can they develop recurrent fevers?

He was very low birthweight and 2 months premature. But did so well in his first year and we had no illness. He did get poorly in June for about a month. This current episode seems to have started with my going back to work.

I guess I I just want to know if other people have had similar. Thanks

Sounds like the antibiotics didn't work for the ear infection? My son has had reoccurring tonsillitis and ear infections since May 2020.

@BAST1 that sounds so hard, your poor son and poor you. Do the doctors have any advice for you? Hope it clears up as he gets older and stronger.

I spoke to a female doctor today. It was probably the most reassuring conversation I've had. Basically, there are a lot more bugs around and it will probably be more of the same.until winter. But that he is building up antibodies and strengthening his immune system. To look out for warning signs (unresponsiveness, excessive vomitting and diarrhea) but apart from that just to keep him comfortable. Roll on spring

My youngest seems to have had one thing after another. I don’t think they’re connected but has been ill off and on since the start of September. I think they are really feeling it due to not being exposed to anything for so long.

@Amberflames sorry to hear that. I went back to work in September and the first week back was when mine got ill. The doc yesterday said that with kids going back to school there are simply more bugs around so chances are there may be a link. It's horrible to see them ill so often when they are so little, just lots of tlc
