Dermoid cyst

My baby daughter (4 months) is going in for a scan on what I suspect to be a dermoid cyst next weekend. It’s on the bridge of her nose - she’s had it since birth and originally we thought it was just the shape of her face, but since reading more about it, I’m pretty sure it’s a DC and we’re going to need to have it removed.

I’m feeling pretty anxious about the whole thing, and wondered if anyone had experiences of this that they could share? I know it’s not the worst thing, but the idea of her having surgery, going under GA, and having a scar is getting me in a bit of a state. Anyone else dealt with this?

Hey - hope all went ok with your daughters scan. Did it turn out to be a dermoid cyst? I have exactly the same concern with my daughter at the moment (although she’s 2!). Only recently did we think to get it checked - always figured it was a feature of her face and no doctor has ever mentioned it :/

Yes it did @applesoda - although her follow-up appointment with the dermatologist isn’t until mid-Jan, so not got a whole lot of information beyond that yet. I’ll let you know when we do though. My GP didn’t seem to know much about it!

my daughter had one of these - on her eyebrow. it gradually shrunk and tribal wasn't needed. It was by the time she was 2.5. She also had a large, raised hemangioma - again this has nearly gone - she is nearly 4.

and REMOVAL wasn't needed!!

Ah yep our GP has been a bit useless with it also - he thinks it’s just a lump of bone (?!) and doesn’t warrant further checks, but I have a nagging feeling to get a second opinion in case it grows or she feels self conscious when she’s older (it’s right in the middle of her forehead).

My dd had a dermoid cyst removed from her eyebrow at 11 months. By the time she had surgery it was about the size of a marble. The operation was really quick, day surgery and took about 30 mins I think. And to be honest the worst bit was her having to be nil by mouth before hand.
It healed really well and just had a couple of dissolvable stitches.
I was really worried about the scar and as soon as it was healed plastered it in bio oil. She is 14 now and I can’t even remember the last time I noticed the scar.

I don't have any experience of dermoid cysts, but my dd had to have GA at 10 days old, and then 13 GA between 18 months and 2.5.

It is really hard as a parent. But be reassured that the doctors and nurses are really experienced at dealing with small babies and are amazing.

She has had no lasting effects from all those GA and doesn't actually remember the hospital at all.

baby's skin heals really well. My friends dd has a huge collar bone to belly button scar from an op as a child and it is really really faded and hardly noticable now.

Update - the specialist told us that they wouldn’t remove the dermoid cyst on the NHS, because apparently they don’t do that anymore?? But we have a check up 12 months on so see if it’s grown. Has anyone else had a similar response? It’s not what I was expecting, and not sure how I feel about it!

My dd had one on her back that would occasionally swell and cause her pain so we did have to have to removed. We managed to put it off until she was 5 so by that point it was an in-office procedure just like with an adult. If it had been on her face it might have been different because they would have wanted to take more time to control scarring. Your 5 year old having GA is not nearly as scary as your 4 month old though.

I would ask about the pros and cons of waiting to get it removed. Baby skin often heals really well and getting it out small may be easier. It is largely a cosmetic problem, but they do have a tendency to grow over time and the face is a place where discomfort is likely to felt quickly. We can also be honest and admit that the face isn’t a particularly great place to have one from a social perspective. It might be worth a private consult with a dermatologist to determine the best approach.
