Stopping baby eating nappy cream during changing

I don't use nappy cream every change but when I do, DS (3.5 months) is guaranteed to put his hands in it. We were on the go today and I didn't have a spare wipe to hand, so he got his hand to his mouth before I could try to do anything about it. 1) How dangerous is ingesting some of it? 2) Any tips? I don't really understand how I can put the new nappy on any quicker, as he just reaches down straightaway. He usually does the same with poo too.

Put the nappy underneath him, put the cream on quickly and then fasten up the nappy. Gove him something to hold in his hand while doing the nappy change. Link rings are a good size to hold at this age.

Something to hold sounds a great shout, will order something. We do all of the rest and no matter how quickly, it's like as soon as he feels something new on his skin he wants to investigate!

You don’t need to order anything! Just hand him the pack of wipes or a small toy.

You just have to be quicker and when he reaches hold his hands with his feet. Can’t explain, but I remember doing this on occasion.
