👶 Urine collection bag for baby girl - Where can I get one please?

LovelyBitOfSquirrelInTheWirral · 21/10/2021 23:49

My 6 month old DD has strong smelling urine and
the GP needs a sample. (Thankfully she seems fine in herself otherwise).
I’ve been trying to catch a sample on and off for hours now with no success and I’m worried it’s going to make her skin sore by holding the sample pot there. I knew it would be difficult but it just seems impossible 😢

I read on an old thread about a paediatric urine collection bag which has tape around it to hold it in place and it worked for them. Has anyone had to get one of these before? If so, how/where did you get it please?

I’ve seen them on Amazon in a big pack but I really only need a couple and I need them in the morning. I’m wondering if they would be a prescription/chemist type thing 🤷🏽‍♀️
I wish I’d have thought to call a late opening chemist earlier.

I’m posting here as it will be difficult to get through to the surgery in the morning and will understandably take ages to get a call back. By the time I’ve got hold of one hopefully and then attempt to get a sample at home I’m going to be short of time to get it to the surgery for it to be tested, so I thought I’d try and ask here.

GP said I can refrigerate the sample to take in tomorrow if I get one so that’s why I have been trying this evening.

This is a genuine post, nothing dodgy, MN would be able to confirm.

Thank you.

Gp gave me the bag. They must be expensive though as when in hospital they refused to give me it and told me to just hold a pot under her. I used the kidney bowls sat it between my legs and dd on my knee and watched TV. Eventually caught it but took hours. Those little bags were amazing! But I've only ever got them from GP and i know other GPs didn't have them for friends.

Merriwicks · 21/10/2021 23:54

You could phone chemist I guess, normally you can also buy things like this from them if they have them in stock. My local one charges me 50p for urine bottles for me. Gp will give them free.

Thanks so so much Merriwinks. I’ll call the surgery first thing and see what they say.

Sometimes the hospitals want a "clean catch" in a pot. I have no idea why they thought me holding pot with ds trying to grab it and fingers all over it would be any cleaner than a bag....

Exactly, holding the pot on and off for hours must mean it’s no longer clean/sterile.

I think I might try some sterile gauze next in DD’s nappy and squeeze the wee hopefully into the pot. At least we’ll have something to take in the morning I hope 🤞but knowing our luck we’ll have a poo nami next to deal with 🙈😂

I saw some advice about putting a nappy inside out depending on the material of it.

How did you get on today OP. Hope you were successful

Sorry I realise its a bit late in the day, but we always get ours from amazon. Apart from a specific children's hospital, we have never been able to get any from the Dr, local hospitals or chemist for our dd. The most they give us is the collection pads that look like sanitary towels that u put in the nappy and then try and syringe the wee out of which is a nightmare!!

The Dr surgery is always happy with the collection bag method, but if she has to go to hospital then they normally ask for a clean catch while we are there.

On amazon u can get packets of 10 bags- so you can keep a stash at home (our lo is susceptible to uti's due to a known issue)

Hope u managed to get a sample op and that ur little one is OK.x

Hi @Merriwicks, Sorry for the late reply I haven’t been back on MN since. Thanks so much for asking. That night I ended up staying up and continued trying to catch a sample while DD was asleep and didn’t manage to catch a drop 😭 I did try the sterile gauze in the nappy at one stage but that didn’t work. DD was fine in herself the whole time so I gave up, got a bit of sleep while I could and then tried again a few hours later. I wasn’t expecting anything after the long night with no results and lo and behold DD did a wee and I caught about quarter of a bottle! I then thought I’d see if any more filtered through and she then did a big wee and the bottle filled up exactly to the line. What a superstar DD was (with a little help from mummy 😂). I can’t tell you how excited I was!

It’s since been tested and they only found low level general bacteria which the GP said was likely from the surrounding skin. He said to keep an eye on things and any changes or concerns to contact the surgery.
DD continues to be her normal self thankfully. She does seem to be teething on and off and I am wondering if that could be the cause of the strong wee. Some people say it is, but it seems to be 50/50 when I googled. It’s a mystery.

@Waffle12 - Thanks so much for your post. Would you mind posting a link for the ones you buy please? There are various different ones and I’d prefer to buy the ones which are definitely right for baby girls and seem to work. I’d like to have some just in case. The catch it in a bottle method is arduous and stressful! Plus it does annoy DD understandably.

That is great news, all was clear. My dd stinks at the moment from thrush Haloween Sad there is just always something.

LovelyBitOfSquirrelInTheWirral · 28/10/2021 19:48

Thank you merriwicks, I was glad it wasn’t an infection.
Oh no your poor DD and you. Exactly there is always something to worry about and deal with 😢

When my boy needed a wee sample as a baby I was told to put cotton wool in his nappy and then when it was wet I was able to squeeze it out into the sample pot.

After playing the 'catch the pee' game in A&E for about four hours for our son, I decided I didn't ever want to have to play that game at home and ordered two urine collection bags from Amazon - which have stayed in the cupboard ever since (son is now 12!) Chances are that the plastic has disintegrated Grin
