Hand Foot & Mouth - Silly question?

I think my DS has the start of HFM (or so I suspect) however, majority of the rash is on his legs? At the moment anyway...

Would it only typically be HFM? Or would legs be included?

Also does it spread quickly? I've never seen anything about HFM so not sure what I need to look out for. He had a temp Sat night and Sunday. Now has developed a rash.

Do I leave it, do I need to call the GP?

Any advice would be welcomed.

TIA

Mine we're headed to toe in a viral rash but with specific spots round their mouths and nappy area. Nothing much on their hands and feet. They did have some blisters in their mouths too and were miserable.

Nothing the GP can do for HF&M, although I took mine to be checked as I hadn't seen it before and couldn't be certain that's what it was.

If it is HF&M then eating might hurt so just lots of fluids. The poorly-ness was over quite quickly (a couple of days or so) but the rash hung around for ages!

My 2 year old had it last week, his spots started on his bum, spread to his thighs and then came up round his mouth. He had a few "under" the skin on his hands and feet but his mouth and bum were the worst. No mouth ulcers or temperature though.

My son was covered on his knees and elbows with a couple on his bottom and around/in his mouth.

Thank you so much for replying.

It's funny because he had a temp over the weekend and I thought I was just another cold brewing but I'm the same, I've never seen or heard much about HFM. So perhaps I should take him or send some photos to my GP to confirm.

Did you LO get the rash first? DS has been a little grumpy which is not like him but put it down to being tired and getting ill again.

It's nursery, honestly it's one thing after another.

Ok, most people are saying not the usual places.

Is it contagious? Should I be keeping him away from nursery/ family etc?

It is contagious, but NHS say you don't need to keep off nursery if they are well enough. You might want to check your own nursery policy though in case they are stricter

My childminder wouldn't let him back till the marks had blistered as it is very contagious. Mine had a mild case just a few marks on hands and bum. Couldn't see any blisters in mouth but he was off his food. Had a cough and cold and dodgy nappies.

GlumyGloomer · 20/10/2021 21:43

My dd had a temp, followed by spots on her arms and legs, and off her food. She was ill for about 4 days.
I caught it and was deeply unwell for two weeks. Helped me understand the food thing though, anything that wasn't basically plain pasta or rice caused horrible burning throat pain.

twinmum86 · 21/10/2021 06:57

I can't remember what came first (it was nearly 4 years ago!) but I know we stayed home until all the spots had healed over.

As PP said it's not like chicken pox where nhs says stay at home, but I think most nurseries will want him to stay away while most contagious. They definitely won't take him with a temperature at the moment anyway!

My 2yo has HFM just now. GP was able to diagnose it with certainty over the phone just by my description, but they also offered a face to face appointment if I was worried. So if your unsure it's always worth trying GP. My son was lucky and didn't have fever or difficulties eating. Worst spots were on his bottom and his hands. A couple of blisters on his toes but none in his mouth. GP said kids are most contagious before the spots appear but didn't give me a clear answer about when it wouldn't be contagious anymore.
