Awaiting GP appointment after school.

It’s marble sized. Not painful. No injury. Under the skin on skull behind left ear. Suddenly appeared on a Sunday. DS washes his hair in the shower daily so surely would have noticed it before then but says he didn’t.

Couldn’t get a GP appointment yesterday. Sent pics to GP this morning and he’s just rung me. He was a bit unsure, asked me if DS had lost weight or his behaviour had changed (terrified me!) said it could be a gland or cyst but it’s rock hard and doesn’t move around. DS hasn’t been ill, feels fine although is quite tired and emotional probably due to starting secondary.

Pic attached. Any ideas to calm me down before 4pm!

Oh bless you. Kids are such a worry sometimes aren't they.

I don't have any medical experience but I'm sure we have glands there.

Fingers crossed the wait goes quickly and the lump is nothing to worry about Flowers

Ahhhhhbisto · 12/10/2021 12:38

Could be a cyst. Or a swollen lympth node, has he been unwell recently?

Ahhhhhbisto · 12/10/2021 12:40

Sorry just read, he hasn't been ill. Lots of harmless reasons for lumps. Hope the appointment goes well this afternoon Daffodil

Damnyoureyes · 12/10/2021 12:43

My friend had one of these, can’t remember the fancy medical term but turned out to be a fatty lump.
Whipped off with a bit of numbing stuff in 2 minutes flat.
Quite common apparently.
Dr pimple popper shows bloody loads of them.

Hotpinkangel19 · 12/10/2021 12:46

OP I have had this a few times and so has my daughter, exactly the same as this. hers grew quite big, and I worried and took her to the GP who explained it was in fact a lymph node and that it can take a few weeks to go down completely. I wasn't sure as I always thought lymph nodes were soft and moveable, and this was hard, like a piece of bone or a marble, and didn't move at all. Apparently this one doesn't move and is hard though. Sure enough it had gone away, just took a few weeks. GP told me not to let her touch it, as it will keep it swollen. Just watch out in case it becomes red or hot, as that can be a sign of infection.

AutumnIsTheBest · 12/10/2021 12:47

Thank you both! It’s probably nothing (keep repeating to myself).

Could it be early onset of mastoiditis?
Hope it isn’t as that can be nasty but that’s often how it starts

alwaysscared · 12/10/2021 13:01

I get these, they come up and are a bit sore for a couple of days then go. I always just thought it was a gland, but I'm no expert! Good you are seeing GP

AutumnIsTheBest · 12/10/2021 13:02

Thank you as well Damnyou and HotPink. It probably is a lymph node, hopefully his immune system reacting to germs at secondary school Grin, but never seen this before and he is my 4th DC! It feels so big as well.

GP concerned me and DH is worried as well very unusually. I have been a mess when my DC were ill, which they very rarely are thankfully, due to losing one very traumatically to a rare disorder at birth but I had got better over the last few years or so I’d thought!

Netflix and BrewCake for the next few hours.

Could be something so you are best getting it checked. Could also be nothing so try not to panic. My DS had a few similiar bumps when he was only a toddler. He had to get a few tests in case it was something serious but it wasn't and the lumps are still there years later. I hope your son is also OK. You are getting it checked right away which is all you can do.

AutumnIsTheBest · 12/10/2021 13:06

Yes, Mastoiditis came up on Google Debbie.

Sorry to hear that OP. Keep yourself busy but relaxed today Cake

Hope the appointment is reassuring.

How are thing now @AutumnIsTheBest

Hope all is well

AutumnIsTheBest · 12/10/2021 18:56

Gp has said it looks like a lipoma as he could move it but to keep an eye on it in the absence of any other symptoms so panic over! Feel a bit calmer now.

Thank you all,

I've got those.
If it was mastoiditis I'm pretty sure you would know it. My dd had it suspected and was proper ill. Was admitted to hospital with it. Ear pain, temperature, vomit, poor observation etc. Puss pouring from her ear too.

CottonSock · 12/10/2021 19:13

Pus not puss! No bloody cats!
My fatty lumps are in my armpits , but do pop up all over.
