DS 9 cramps and blood in stools

DS has been complaining of stomach ache past 2 weeks, I didn't think much of it because it seemed to follow on from a bout of 24hr V&D, and I thought it's probably just linked to that. He told me last week he has seen red blood in his poo and when he wiped, so I made an appointment with our GP who saw him on Friday. He requested a blood and stool sample. We couldn't give it in this morning as he didn't need to go and ended up going whilst at school, hopefully we can get a sample from him tomorrow morning.

But I'm quite worried. Anyone else had a child with this issue? Any professional have an idea what it could be? No fever. He's had headaches, gone off his food slightly but still managing most meals.

Maybe it is just a pile/ cut ., is he constipated?

OhFFSitsyouagain · 11/10/2021 18:12

He told me his poo is quite loose and 'squirty' so definitely not constipated and he's going most days. No pain around the bottom, just his tummy he says.

Definitely get the stool sample in as that will help to tell if it's from the bug he had or anything else.

Is he going more than once a day?

OhFFSitsyouagain · 11/10/2021 18:26

No it's mostly just the once. Yes we will try and get it tomorrow, the problem is the sample has to be dropped off to the surgery by a certain time so morning is the only option.

that's good it's just the once - they shouid also test for celiac which they will likely do from the blood test.

@Remmy123 that's what I was going to suggest.

WaterBottle123 · 11/10/2021 18:59

My friends little boy has this occasionally- it's been checked and does settle down. Good you are getting tested for reassurance.

OhFFSitsyouagain · 11/10/2021 19:41

Yes, GP suggested checking for coeliac disease and any infection. I have a couple of people in my extended family with CD so I'm thinking it might be a possibility.

My son has an IBD (no family history) but he was going more than once a day which is why I asked.

Stool test will show any inflammation, if there is some. Bloods also can show inflammation too.

onlyreadingneverposting8 · 11/10/2021 20:48

My DS has IBD (he was 17 at dx). His symptoms were bloody stools, diarrhoea, cramping on going and frequency - 9 to 12 times a day at the point he was admitted to hospital (he was very poorly). Hopefully your son just has an infection or maybe fissure that will clear up soon! In the mean time the doctor is doing the right tests.

OhFFSitsyouagain · 15/10/2021 18:15

The surgery rang me, they said hospital has requested another stool sample? I wonder why they need another. We gave them two bottles. Is it something to worry about?

@onlyreadingneverposting8 your poor DS! That sounds terrible and I hope his IBD has settled now.

Maybe to see whether there's a difference now...tbh I don't know but DS has to give regular stool samples. He is thankfully now in remission but it's taken 18months to get him there and he's now on a biologic immunosuppressant along with another immunosuppressant and another drug.

Remmy123 · 15/10/2021 19:26

The stool test may have showed some inflammation and so they will need to compare it. Can you ask them?

Communication can be really poor and we are left to worry and wonder.

OhFFSitsyouagain · 16/10/2021 05:58

@Remmy123 I asked the receptionist but she told me she doesn't know and can't find out why. The hospital requested another sample and she's simply passing on the message. We will try to get the sample given in as early as possible next week.

Still waiting to have his blood test done. The GP surgery no longer does them for under 12's and refer to the hospital who will contact us directly. No idea when that will happen as heard nothing yet. I wonder if there is still a shortage of BT bottles!

How frustrating!!

With my son we did a stool test we were then asked to do another one, then we had to do one more and he was then marked as urgent and seen by the gastro paediatrics very quickly.

Also his blood tests flagged inflammation in his body.

My son is 12 and has rectal bleeding. Started this week. Son is really upset tonight as he's been on bloody Google. His is bright red in wiping. Phoned GP last week, got another call Monday.

TheVolturi · 16/10/2021 20:34

People can become lactose intolerant especially after a stomach bug. My son was only 4 when he became lactose intolerant, he was having bloody diarrhoea regularly with tummy ache, I was so worried. We were told to cut out dairy and by magic it stopped.

Remmy123 · 17/10/2021 16:23

@Justwingingit2005 oh bless him - google will scare the life out of him!! It's probably just a small pile x
