2yr old projectile vomiting, any practical advice?

Any practice advice?

Started at 5:30am, every 20 mins. Small amounts of water comes back up in minutes.

Thought It had passed after 1.5 hrs no sickness she nibbled on 2 small breadsticks, seemed fine, asked for a yoghurt, but straight back up again. She's happy enough in between (tired and under the weather but happy watching tv) but hungry and thirsty but it's not doing her any favours. I'm moving to a teaspoon or two every half hour now I think.

Any other practical advice until this passes?

We've just been in hospital with this. They made DS (4) do a fluid challenge which meant we had to give 10ml of water every 10 minutes until he kept it down. And then slowly progress to the BRAT diet with food so just bland plain things like dry toast, banana, rice, dry crackers. DS was poorly for a week with it. Awful virus Sad get well soon to your little one.

Oh NO dairy at all for a while. We made this mistake and it upset the gut massively again.

Being sick in itself is fine, they get bugs and as long as you keep giving fluids - a teaspoon or 2 an hour is not enough - she will likely be fine. You can familiarise yourself with the signs of dehydration meantime.

That said, if you child is actually projectile vomiting they need to see a doc ASAP.

@sparklecrazy gosh that doesn't sound good, hope all ok now.

Well it seems to have passed so far, she had the worst of it around 2:30 and thought she was going downhill but, she was asking for food quite quickly afterwards, I gave her 5/6 grapes, small amount of water. Then she slept for an hour or so and after that much brighter. She's had some dry cereal, more water and is in bed asleep. Hopefully that's it. She's only 2 and really didn't grasp what was going in bless her.

But it's the first time ever I've had sick inside my bra. Dear god!

Poor you OP. They tend to bounce back so quickly at this age so hopefully tomorrow it'll all be forgotten.

Our GP has always said that as long as we could get some fluids into DD and she was still having wet nappies that we didn't need to worry too much. Always err on the side of caution when they're this young though.

In terms of practical advice, we had a little succession of sick bugs when DD started nursery and I learned a few useful things:

  1. With DD, usually around 5 to 10 minutes after the first puke, another equally nasty one would follow, so I'd keep her in the bathroom for this time span.

  2. keep a stack of old towels ready to grab in the airing cupboard and cover the furniture/floor with these as it's easier to clean towels than upholstery/duvets/carpets etc. if you don't manage to catch the puke

  3. Use bibs as this might save a few clothing changes

  4. this might sound weird but it can be intimidating for kids to puke into a massive bucket. I bought a small size washing up bowl just for this task which is easier to hold under a small person's face

Thanks @INeedNewShoes that's really helpful. I had grabbed towels this morning to save the duvet covers but was too late! I tried a baking bowl but she didn't like that, and the sink, same, and it came so quick there wasn't much I could do anyway but get her onto hard surface where possible. We have both done 5 changes of clothes, bibs are deff a good idea for next time....

It's the first time she's had a sickness bug, so a first for me too! She's still sleeping so far.... fingers crossed.

Lemonade (sips) and custard creams or rich tea have always done the trick with mine. They feel better for the sugar. Nothing worse than a vomiting toddler, you have my sympathy. Bicarb works well on the carpet to get rid of the smell. I go through all the towels as just use them like a giant protective bib type covering. There's always some that misses it though 😩 mine hated a bowl too at that age. Hope your little one is better soon.

Glad she's on the mend, projectile vomit is the worst, I remember one of mine covering me, the sofa, the wall and the poor dog!!

Avoid dairy for a few days. Even once she seems better her stomach might be sensitive to it.
