Tongue tie

DD is 5 weeks old and I was told by HV at her 1 week check that she has a tongue tie and that unless it was affecting weight gain nothing would be done. The community midwife said the same and that because I’m not breastfeeding it shouldn’t be an issue. I feel as though it is affecting her feeding. She is gaining weight and plenty of wet/dirty nappies but she keeps getting sucking blisters on her lips which I’ve been told not to worry about but I’m presuming this is from her having to suck harder maybe. She has also been choking and spluttering on her milk whilst feeding which I think could also be related. Does anyone have experience of tongue tie affecting formula feeding? It seems to only be addressed if breastfeeding. I’m seeing HV next week so going to push to have it corrected I think.

I agree push for it, the consultant who did ours said every child deserves to luck an ice cream! But more seriously our dd had problems with solid food and speech due to tt and had op to release at age 2, would have been much better done early (which we pushed for with Dd2). It is basically painless for babies, Dd2 slept through it!

In the meantime also try different flow bottles, i think babies with tt sometimes need an easier/faster flow

Thank you, I will try that I hadn’t considered she may need a faster flow I just presumed slower. I’ll definitely speak to GP/HV about getting it corrected

DD was 4 years old when she had her tongue tie released. It was done under general anaesthetic purely by chance when having treatment for severe and frequent nose bleeds. All I will say is that it was life changing for us in the best possible sense and I just wish it had been done when she was a baby/toddler who puked daily, multiple times. No issues with speech sounds, before or after, although she was 3 before she uttered more than a couple of words. I believe some dentists are trained to release tongue ties.

My eldest had tongue tie correction at a week old. I got lucky as the county in which I gave birth were piloting a tongue tie correction service. I know the midwife who did my daughter's also had private patients from outside the area. If you want to have it done and the NHS refuses you can find someone to do it privately at a cost of around £100.

BTW if take literally a few minutes when they are tiny.
