Hi my dd has quite complex teeth probs and is under the care of a dental hospital
She has an impacted canine which sadly will need to be extracted & the milk tooth left in place .
The orthodontist has now recommended an expander for her top teeth , the photos that My daughter has seen online look frightening
Any advice please ?

I don’t know about xtractors, but I am in my 40s with a primary canine tooth. My secondary canine wasn't extracted and is lying under my lower front teeth not causing any issues.

Hi Enoughtime my dd’s is the same laying between the front tooth & tooth next to it
It’s horizontal and can’t be saved .
She will need at least two years of treatment I am worried about the expander and wondering if it changes the Shape of the face and how painful it is

My daughter inherited my unusual teeth issue and had a plate brace to push her teeth outwards at around 9-10 years old for 1 year (despite still having primary teeth) as it had springs to push secondary top front teeth forwards, then a block brace top and bottom at around 12 to straighten everything, sometimes with mini chains to twist teeth. She's 3 years on and can't imagine not having a brace, it becomes routine to have things tightened every 6-8 weeks. There were delays with covid as no appointments for months so think that added 9 months on. She'll need to wear retainer at night to stop them moving once the brace is removed.

In some ways talking about it as routine has helped my DD not to overthink it. Paracetamol and eating soup helps for days after big changes.

I'm glad my DD has a brace BTW, her top teeth were crooked and she had an underbite. That is all being fixed.
My bottom teeth are v crooked but luckily top a lot less visibily so.

Thankyou for your replies , I’m just hoping that it doesn’t cause too much discomfort & does the trick .
