7 year old complaining of toothache but dentist can't find anything wrong!

Complained on and off for last 2 weeks. Randomly burst into tears with pain last week so I took her to dentist - checked over can't see anything wrong- no infection/swollen gums etc.
Had her checked over by a gp in case it was referred pain from an earache or something- he also said everything fine.
Picked her up from school on Thursday and teacher said she had been crying in pain for the last 20 mins with her teeth. Now she is not a complainer, and I'm especially surprised she cried in school.
So back to the dentist we went yesterday, another look still nothing to report. Told to see how she goes and if comes back again they may prescribe antibiotics in case it's the beginning of an infection, however to cause her to cry in pain she said would expect visible signs.

Most of the day she doesn't mention it, when she does she just says she can feel it but it's not really bad. And then she woke up at 4am last night screaming crying in pain and I just don't know what to do?

What else could it be if not her tooth? I feel her cheek looks ever so slightly swollen (which her dad also noticed) but when mentioned to the doctor he said they look fine but he's obviously not sure what it normally looks like ha!

Any ideas? Do I keep pestering the dentist? Do I give her antibiotics even tho there is no sign of ab infection ? Help :(

Have they done X-rays? I had an issue with a tooth, even with a very thorough inspection the dentist couldn’t see any issues, but an X-ray revealed a cavity. My teeth are quite close-set so it couldn’t be seen otherwise.

Or, is it a back molar coming through?, I remember my dd having aches when she was about 6 I think and it was a back molar

TwinMum89 · 02/10/2021 21:23

Could it be anxiety/stress? In the past when I have been feeling anxious or stressed I have clenched my jaw, leading to really tight jaw muscles. That can cause pain which feels like toothache. Maybe she is clenching her jaw/grinding her teeth whilst asleep, which could explain the 4am wake?

Rugbymumof2 · 02/10/2021 21:29

No experience of this in children but my OH used to get awful pain in his top molars on one side, multiple trips to dentist who didn't find a issue.
I'm not sure how he found out what was causing it but it turned out to be referred sinus pain.
Has your DD had a cold recently, may be something completely different in her case.
I hope she recovers from whatever it is quickly.

Could it be referrered pain from somewhere else like the ears or nerve pain

romdowa · 02/10/2021 21:34

Does she grind her teeth? It could be pain from that either in the teeth or being referred from her jaw.

bellsbuss · 02/10/2021 21:37

I would say it's her ears, my children have always said it feels like they have toothache when they have an ear infection.

weresupermonsters · 02/10/2021 21:39

@Maflingo no they didn't X-ray, I will make sure they do if we go back again.

I did consider anxiety/stress but other that this tooth complaint she's just her normal self but I will have another chat with her.

I don't think she grinds her teeth unless she's doing it at night and I just haven't heard it?
The crying episodes have been at total random time- 5pm, 2pm and 4am!

Just feels rubbish that I don't have an answer for her or a way to make it stop! It doesn't hurt her when eating which I would have thought it would if it was a tooth and the reason I went to the doctors in case it was ear/sinus or whatever but dr said everything was fine 🤷🏻‍♀️

@bellsbuss do you think the gp could have missed this when looking?

I'm thinking maybe the antibiotics will be the way to go regardless as should probably cover whatever it is causing it whether it's her teeth or not?

Can you floss between them? My worst pain ever was a seed trapped between my teeth it worked its way into my gum my dentist had to get it out

Elephantsparade · 02/10/2021 21:44

Sinus pain can be felt in teeth

WoMandalorian · 02/10/2021 21:59

Abscess? I had one at age 10. It didn't show up on my x ray and about 2 weeks later I went in to have the tooth removed. The numbing medication wasn't working no matter how many times he injected. Eventually he went ahead anyway. If you go to get the problem tooth removed I'd definitely request getting another x ray on the day just in case!
