Daughters jaw line

Hi my daughter is 11. She is quite self conscious about her double chin. I have spoken to our local orthodontist regarding her teeth but he doesn’t think she needs a brace. I feel that’s brace may help define her jaw but don’t want to make an issue of it but on the other hand don’t want to regret not having braces if it may help. I have attached a photo.

I don’t see a double chin at all. All I see is plump cheek which is probably what they call puppy fat and will slowly reduce over her lifetime. Hollywood stars are getting fat injected into their cheeks to get the look your DD has naturally.

It's hard to comment without seeing her teeth. Her chin looks a lot like my oldest DDs at that age and my DD had a prominent overbite.

Does your DD have that? Or are her teeth ok? Not sticking out?

DDs overbite was quite bad...almost as bad as the pic in this link

www.chatfieldbraces.co.uk/blog/everything-you-need-to-know-about-overbite/

The NHS don't do braces for weak jawlines alone though...and jaw surgery is quite a massive undertaking...especially for a child.

Is DD self conscious? Has she mentioned it?

She doesn't have a double chin.

Why are you asking for unnecessary braces in the hope itll define her jaw if you're not making it an issue?

She's 11, she still has baby fat going on. What you're looking at will smooth out during puberty

Kindertonguehappierlife · 30/09/2021 09:27

There’s nothing wrong with her and if the orthodontist says she doesn’t need one, she clearly doesn’t. Are you a dentist? Don’t make her insecure about something which isn’t even an issue

Is DD self conscious?

It's right there in the op - She is quite self conscious about her double chin.

In all fairness to the OP, you can't see the child's teeth. They might stick out but not enough for the NHS to do braces....the measurement has to be quite severe to get braces on the NHS.

Also, the photograph isn't showing the DD's double chin OP. I don't doubt there's a little extra chin there from the front but a lot of 11 year olds have that.

Bluntness100 · 30/09/2021 09:30

There is certainly no double chin on that photo. Why does she think she’s got one? She’s normal plump cheeks of a child.

My ds2 had cheeks like that, he also had severe overcrowding and a class ii malocclusion. When he was 8 I took him to a dentist who gave him an appliance called an alf. It was just a really light wire behind his teeth, completely invisible.
It expanded his jaw and completely changed his face. The massive cheeks disappeared and his upper and lower jaw came forward.
He is 11 now and there is enough room in his jaw for all of his teeth. They're not perfectly straight, he will still need train tracks if he wants them to be perfect, but he won't need any extractions.

Does she strain to close her mouth?
