Mouth rash above tonsils (with pic)

Anyone know what this might be? Never encountered a rash like this before.

We went to chemists, pharmacist said to get a GP appointment and didn’t want to advise, phoned GP and it’s just a case of phoning at 8am everyday til I get an appointment.

She seems ok in herself, a bit snotty but she suffers with hayfever sometimes , said it hurts to swallow but isn’t making a big fuss. Seems to have appeared in the last 24 hours or so. Have done lots of googling but can’t find anything similar.

To be honest it looks like she’s just coughed too much or cleared her throat too much and has caused a bit of a burst blood vessel thing / irritation. I would just gargle with some salt water and it will probably clear up in a day or so.

Do you have econsult at your docs to send the pics in?
It's easier and quicker at my GPs to get answers.

GingerBeverage · 22/09/2021 17:15

First thought it looks like strep.

Could be ITP - low platelets, often caused by viral infections. Needs a blood test.

Bacterial tonsillitis can cause petechial haemorrhage spots at the roof of the mouth. I can't see the tonsils very well in the photo, are her glands swollen? Temperature?

endofagain · 22/09/2021 17:36

Check everywhere else for any sort of rash. Watch out for headache, high temperature and problems with intolerance to light (photophobia). Send photo to GP is you possibly can, but if any of the other symptoms appear I would get medical attention, even if it means A&E.
It might be nothing, but you have always got to consider the (rare) possibility of meningitis in children.

Thingywhatsit · 22/09/2021 17:41

She’s got a bit of a temperature, still seems to have an appetite (well she is impatiently waiting for her tea so will see when good is in front of her). Her glands are fine. Tonsils don’t seem swollen.

Guessing it might be some weird viral thing. Just alarmed me slightly as in 18 years of parenting never encountered it before.

I wish we had econsult as an option, but unfortunately not in Uk. We have to pay to see the dr here too which I could do without as am skint as can be and can barely afford to get us to payday.

Hi all

Just an update in case anyone encounters similar.

Been to the drs, it’s a bacterial infection of the palate. Antibiotics prescribed (only her 2nd course ever and she 7!) dr said it’s similar to tonsillitis….

This is most definitely strep throat. What you're seeing on the roof of the mouth is called petechia and coupled with discomfort swallowing is a definite sign of strep infection. You need to get some antibiotics to clear it completely. (Amoxicillin is the preferred antibiotic for strep) You don't want to leave strep untreated as it has some potential long-term dangers such as rheumatic fever. It is also very contagious. Make sure you throw out all your toothbrushes and get new ones.
