Slight jaundice. Told to put in window?

Hi everyone.
My 6 day old has slight jaundice on her nose. I've been told to put her in the window. I've done this. Does anyone know how long for? I feel quite worried about it all. They said she's absolutely fine it's a tiny tiny bit and she's well above birth weight already. I appreciate any advice.

Oh my six day old got this from the visiting midwife too! He was asleep in front of the window anyway.

It’s fine don’t stress about it. I can’t even see the jaundice myself but apparently it’s very common for newborns to have a tiny touch of it.

SoupDragon · 21/09/2021 09:25

Don't be worried!

DS2 looked like he'd had a bad run in with a bottle of fake tan when he was born. I was also told to put him in sunlight. His took a while to go but the HVs were never worried about it.

FlatStanletta · 21/09/2021 09:26

I’m no expert op but I would think just until she gets grumpy or hot?! Prob not that long at a time… I’d have thought a window might get a bit warm!

The main thing that will flush out jaundice is feeding so I would focus on that too. My son had jaundice and narrowly escaped hospital with it but I was told to just feed feed feed and also had to get some breastfeeding support and it went by itself within a week!

littlebutterfly185 · 21/09/2021 09:27

Congratulations on your little one!!
Honestly don't worry at all. I used to keep the Moses basket near the window and just try to give LO as much sunlight as possible. They'll be just fine Smile

littlebutterfly185 · 21/09/2021 09:27

Oh yes! Feed lots and lots. It will flush everything out Smile

LIZS · 21/09/2021 09:28

I put ds moses basket next to a window and let him snooze there. Unless it is very sunny it is fine.

trippingflip · 21/09/2021 09:32

Yeah I had to do that. A bit of sunlight brightens then right up. Moses basket under a window or lots of walks.
But important thing is to expose the skin to sunlight so don't cover your little one up too much (hence better under window as it's warmer inside these days)

My daughter was yellow when she was born and was placed under a lamp in hospital.
The jaundice soon faded.
This was 40 odd years ago so I am sure current advice re the window is just as good.

Congratulations on your new baby xx

JasonMomoasgirlfriend · 21/09/2021 10:20

Yes I'd put at a window, obviously make sure they don't get too hot or cold but the more sunlight they can be absorbed the better.
My son had bad jaundice where we had to be readmitted to hospital and had two lamps on him and almost needed a blood transfusion.
Yours sounds much less concerning so try not to worry.
It is very common

One thing though, please make sure to feed every two - three hours. My son was so tired from jaundice he didn't eat much, slept most of the time and that didn't help the jaundice.

Congratulations btw, it's a special time x

When a baby has more severe jaundice they are often put under UV lights in hospital to help the body process the excess bilirubin in the blood, sunlight has the same effect which is why parents are advised to pop baby in front of a window. Congratulations!

Momof2boys1girl · 21/09/2021 13:29

Be careful putting a baby in front of the window, it can become very hot. I’m a midwife and it’s is quite dated advice that some older midwives still use. It’s not good to expose the little ones to UVA/UVB without sunscreen. Best advice is feed feed feed.
Jaundice is a normal physiological process, please don’t worry about it too much. Your midwife will be checking the bilirubin levels. If you’re concerned with not feeding/sleepiness then ask your midwife to come and check your baby’s levels. Congratulations on your little one

The blue lamps aren't actually UV lights as that would be pretty intense for a babies skin! People just think they are. I can't remember what type of lamp they are though, just thought I'd let you know.

I'm imagining an army of tiny babies with Jodie Marsh's body building skin colour.

My DS had it quite bad but luckily enough not so bad he needed help.

I was told to keep feeding and popping him by the window.

rainydogday · 21/09/2021 14:13

Very dated advise. If your baby is feeding well and waking for feeds this is a good sign they are not effected by jaundice. If you are concerned that your baby is over sleepy or has jaundice skin that spreads over arms and legs I would call your maternity unit and ask for a jaundice test. This can be done by a simple light check, some community midwives can do it too. If you baby has dark skin or has yellow eyes, pale poo or if you have had a baby before with jaundice I would ask them to check the jaundice levels.

SylvanasWindrunner · 21/09/2021 14:13

Feed feed feed!!!

DD struggled to feed at birth and her jaundice got bad enough to be readmitted for a couple of days under the blue lamp. Just keep feeding to flush it all out!

WheelieBinPrincess · 21/09/2021 15:35

I intended to have my baby sleep near a slightly open window anyway- during the day and never unsupervised. The fresh air and natural light does them good- I just dress accordingly. In Iceland and Finland babies sleep wrapped up warm outside in the snow. Think sometimes we can be a bit precious here about not exposing a new baby to anything but slightly too warm indoor temperatures. The hospital was horrid, like a sauna, we left early because of that.

MrsTD88 · 01/10/2021 15:00

My girl has jaundice, it was picked up by the midwife on Day 3. We had what should have been our final visit from the midwife today and baby girl still has yellowing in her eyes and mouth albeit her overall colour is much better. She is gaining weight and although a little fussy at times is quite content. The midwife will now come out to see her on Monday to assess again and decide if she needs to go in to hospital for a blood test. I'm so worried she'll have to go in for treatment. There's not much point to this post just wondering if any others had experience of treatment and 2 weeks or know what the bilirubin level needs to be for treatment to be reccomended?
