Toddler breathing and cough

DS (3) woke up with a rattly chest breathing really noisily. I don't think he was struggling to breathe as such as he was talking and fine within himself but still sounded scary. I had noticed when I went up to bed last night that he was occasionally gasping for air a bit like apnoea. Since this morning his chest sounds better but he's developed a really dry cough and his voice is going.

The GP won't see him but prescribed antibiotics and gave us red flags to watch out for and take him to A&E if he starts struggling to breathe.

I'm petrified, I'm also having a c section on Monday for DC2 and worrying about it being Covid. Just got DS a test which was traumatic in itself but won't know the result until tomorrow.

Just wanted to know if anyone else's DC have had similar recently for reassurance that it may just be a plain virus and everything will be OK.

Not had much sleep this week and feeling so overwhelmed with worry right now.

He needs to have a PCR test.

Even if you are positive covid you will still be provided with maternity care.

Look on google/YouTube to find a toddler who is struggling to breath looks like - the muscles under their ribs are pulled in and out when they are trying to breath.

Yes we've just been for a PCR test but won't have the result until tomorrow I imagine. Just feels scary that as we can't see a health care professional it's down to us to judge how bad he is. As it's either we keep him home and do nothing, or go to A&E, there's nothing in between. It just all feels a bit overwhelming.

Is it croup? What did the gp give the abs for?

Mummytocl2 · 14/09/2021 13:53

@idontlikealdi I think it was in case it was a chest infection. I just don't know how they can decide without seeing him/hearing his chest...
