Toddler Fainting due to high temperature

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone has every experienced this so I feel less alone. My daughter ( age 2) had a raised temperature which caused her to pass out blue lips not breathing. Absolutely horrendous. Came round got seen by a doc and been told that it’s a common thing to happen to children when they have a temp. However I can only see information about febrile seizures which isn’t the case. Most horrendous experience. Thanks for reading x

Have you done a Covid test

INeedNewShoes · 13/09/2021 12:13

I am not a medical professional but this sounds unusual. I wouldn't be happy about it. For now I'd make sure you give Calpol /nurofen to keep the temperature stable but if it happens again I'd call 999 if lips are blue and/or not breathing.

A febrile seizure isn't always how you would imagine, a loss of consciousness without movement can be how it presents.

Hi everyone and thanks for replying. She has been to A and E and and they said exactly what you said dontpeel that it can present itself like that. She wasn’t covid tested at the hospital and she is completely herself now albeit off food as usual with a virus.

Glad you got seen and a confirmation, the good thing is you know what it is and the signs now. And they do grow out of it. Very scary the first time it happens though. Glad she's on the mend.

Thank you! Has this happened to any of your children Dontpeeintheplacehouse ? When do they grow out of it? xx

My eldest is 4 years and has always had extreme temperatures whenever ill. He's been hospitalised most times as he also has ASD and sensory issues and it's impossible to get oral medicine into him to bring his temperature down.

With him it's just his arms that physically seize and he makes a strange sound each time. I remember reading ages a go that children usually grow out of it around 6ish (I think).

My son is 11 and still faints if he gets too hot, he also has training induced bradycardia which probably doesn't help. It is very common in children, I also still faint on occasion if I have a high temperature.

Dd had one aged two, never had another. A&E diagnosed an upper respiratory tract infection as the cause of the temperature. Hope your dd is feeling better soon.

DS1 had a febrile convulsion when he was about 20 months. He hadn't been well all day. I was carrying him into the kitchen when he just went completely floppy and passed out. His skin was grey and his lips blue. The paramedics said it was caused by how quickly his temperature shot up rather than the temperature itself. He didn't look as though he was having a convulsion in any sense that I understood, but apparently that's how it often looks. The doctor at A&E said an ear infection was the likely cause. Very scary. He never had another one and is a lanky big 13yo now!

Hope your daughter is feeling better and that you have gotten over the terrible shockThanks
