Help! Blood in IV line

Ellen551 · 07/09/2021 08:40

When my teen came back from surgery there was a small amount of blood mixed with fluid in the extension of the IV line. Is this something anyone else has seen? The bag had been removed, it was just the IV left in and it freaked me

It's usually caused by blood pressure. Happened to me and Paramedic told me it was due to BP, and not uncommon. Hope your teen ok. Could you not ask their medical team for reassurance?

It’s absolutely fine. If the bag of fluids is empty or has been moved low down (when the patient is moved etc) then gravity/pressure lets the blood in the tube.

Perfectly common, don't worry. If they had restarted the IV, the fluid pressure would have pushed the blood back down the cannula.

It’s nothing to worry about at all. (DOI: anaesthetist)
