Random seizure in 11 year old

My 11 year old DS had a seizure yesterday, luckily I was in the same room as him at the time. He's never had anything like this before & has always been fit and healthy.

A&E had a thorough check of him and ruled anything else out. I'm just so nervous now about it happening again, he starts secondary school on Monday, so walking with his mates to and from school, I've also emailed the school just to let them know.

Has anyone else had this with their child, a random one off seizure which has never happened again, just want reassuring stories from other people, so I can stop thinking the worse!

Not my child but I had a random seizure when I was 16, completely out of the blue. I was dozing off in the sitting room with my parents then the next thing I was being examined by paramedics, I was scared and confused so was very non compliant.

They couldn’t find anything wrong in A&E. I was referred to neurology who said it could have been “stress” (aka they had no idea).

At 24 I was diagnosed with a serious congenital heart condition, though I don’t think the two are related.

Last month I had an episode of hypoglycaemia which caused a seizure but again the professionals are unsure why and comfortable it was a one off.

I’m sorry you and your DS has experienced this, it was a frightening thing for more, I’m sure my parents must have been beside themselves, has your DS been referred for any tests?

What tests did they do in A&E?

Ozanj · 04/09/2021 10:25

I would get a referral to a pediatrician / neurology. A&E will only be checking for specific things

My 10yo had two a couple of years ago, neurologist found nothing wrong so think it was due to overheating. Was so worrying at the time, been absolutely fine since.

@ Ozanj if they went to A&E they could have been seen by a paediatrician if they have a children’s one. They can refer from A&E or recommend the GP does if they feel there is an issue that needs investigating.

My son had a seizure on a plane in 2016. Luckily there was a neurosurgeon on board (what are the odds?)!

He told my husband that everyone is "allowed" one unexplained seizure in life. More than one and investigations should follow but if it's just a random one-off it should be fine.

(We found this oddly comforting!)

My DS was 9 at the time it happened.

Did A&E refer you anywhere? My Ds (4) had one a few months ago and after being in 2 hospitals overnight, he was referred to a first seizure clinic. We have a virtual appointment with neurologist next week. Was totally out the blue, no signs, no fever. And absolutely nothing since (that I know of).

Hi,
He had a ECG, blood price, urine taken, bloods taken and a CT scan as he whacked his head on the table whilst he was having the seizure (before I got to him Sad)
All came back normal, paeds came and we were on the children's ward whilst awaiting a few tests. They did mention about a clinic to do with seizures at first but I had to go and get DD once he was moved to the children's ward, and DP said nothing was mentioned about that afterwards.

As someone else has said, most of the nurses/docs said one seizure is "allowed" and obviously if this happens again it would be looked into further.....
I just wanted to see if anyone had a one and not again so I could feel a little bit reassured!

He's been completely fine today & annoying his sister and cousins as usual!! 🤣

My child had a seizure one day, we ended up in A&E but got referred to the Epilepsy clinic for monitoring. I would ask your gp about that, my son began to have other episodes a few months later and has just been diagnosed with Epilepsy following numerous tests.
I'm not saying it to scare you but an epilepsy clinic will monitor them and give you advice in case it happens again.(hopefully not.)
Sometimes seizures can be random, other times they can be the start and there's no way to tell without further investigation.
