Is this worthy of an A&E trip? Excessive drooling

My DS 2 1/2 started crying whilst playing in the living room whilst I was preparing lunch today. When I entered the room he was pointing at his mouth, no blood, slight swelling round his lips. Asked if he had jumped, if his brother had hit him, anything in his mouth (couldn’t see anything) but nothing. Wouldn’t speak and was just crying instead.

He has since been crying on and off all afternoon, barely slept during his daytime nap, didn’t have lunch or dinner and has only sipped some water. He is constantly drooling all day and has needed to change top x3.

I’ve given him calpol to help with the pain and have given both a hot and cold press. He preferred the hot press.

I’m worried about him sleeping tonight as he still has excessive drooling and I will worry about him choking on his drool.

Does this warrant a trip to A&E? Every time I call 111 they always tell me just to go to A&E regardless of how minor the illness / injury. Would a chemist be able to help with anything?

I was worried he may have swallowed a toy that’s lodged in throat which is causing the drooling but he isn’t coughing or touching his throat etc. Everything in his mouth appears normal. I can’t see anywhere that is swollen or red.

He has never cried as much as this though so my mum alarm bells are ringing!

Hope he's being seen now

Sassymcsasserson · 03/09/2021 21:39

As someone who works in A&E definitely go straight. There's lots of things it could be and definitely needs fully checking out.

Shirleyphallus · 03/09/2021 21:44

Hope he’s ok and you’re there now!

Lougle · 03/09/2021 21:45

I hope you've been sent to A&E. You're definitely right to take him.

YukoandHiro · 03/09/2021 22:18

Any news OP?

slavenhaven · 03/09/2021 22:19

Could it be ulcers in his mouth causing pain?

Raindancer411 · 04/09/2021 07:47

@Flake123 You have been on my mind all night. Hope all is ok, please let us know.

Newnamefor2021 · 04/09/2021 07:52

Any update OP?

CoolKitkat · 04/09/2021 10:53

@Flake123 Thinking of you, hope everything is ok xx

Queenbean · 04/09/2021 18:11

@Flake123 did you go in the end? Hope everything is ok

Toddlerteaplease · 04/09/2021 18:13

@iamverytired

Don't bother with 111, excessive drooling can be linked to a severe illness (epiglottitis) and they won't take a risk and will either send an ambulance or tell you to go to a&e, I'd just go yourself now
Yes. Absolutely!
justasking111 · 04/09/2021 20:00

@Flake123 hope things resolved now

DragonLegs · 06/09/2021 21:16

@Flake123. I’ve been wondering how your little one is. I hope they have got the treatment they need. X

Flake123 · 09/09/2021 19:39

Hello,

So sorry ! I thought I had replied back to this but must have not pressed send in my very sleep deprived state.

Thank you all so much for all the advice - it was spot on and I’m so glad I just showed up to A&E rather than call 111 etc.

The staff at the hospital were worried especially about the unexplained drooling and then my DS’ tonsils began to swell and were almost touching whilst we were at the hospital.

X-Rays were taken but inconclusive. My DS refused any fluids point blank and was completely mute for hours when he is normally the biggest chatterbox going!

However, after a throat spray and in the middle of the night he suddenly started getting better on his own and after being checked over by the ENT consultant we were released. The ENT Consultant believed he likely caused some trauma/ injury to himself with a toy or something in his mouth.

He has been teething his molars this week and I’ve suddenly needed to remove lots of toys that he was trying to shove into his mouth to soothe the pain so this seems quite likely.

I’ve got my name down for a children’s first aid course because honestly the experience scared the life out of me. If i didn’t post on here I very much doubt I would have taken him to A&E until things become much more serious! So thank you all again.

CovoidOfAllHumanity · 09/09/2021 20:34

So glad to hear you went and that he got the help he needed and was OK
Any airway problem at any age strikes fear into a Drs heart but especially with a child it's one not to take any chances on.
