Really worried about ds teeth

My ds is 6 and recently needed a filling in a tooth. Another one is being watched. He still has all baby teeth.

He has a very low sugar diet and the only thing the dentist could recommend is to make sure he only drinks water. He only rarely has a squash and has had fruit juice about 5 times in his life.

I'm concerned that he's just destined to have tooth problems.

His friend will eat a bag of sweets most times we meet up and his Mum said he had no dental problems. Also will only drink squash as doesn't like water.

Does anyone have any advice or positive stories? I'm so worried about it.

He using the correct Toothpaste for his age?

Brushing his teeth long enough?

Maybe brush 3 times a day?

His toothpaste is recommended age 6-8.
I brush his teeth twice a day.
I will start brushing for a little longer.

You sound really upset by this as well as worried. It sounds like you're doing your best with the brushing and low sugar diet. Try not to be too hard on yourself. Is he using a mouthwash? Or floss? Both are available for kids and could help as routine dental care as an addition to brushing.

I have a child with bad teeth. Spots where the enamel didn't come through and dentist told me when he was quite little he needs extra care. I encourage him to do plenty of sport and like you, try to avoid sugar. The other small thing I do recommended by dentist, is is get him to rinse his mouth with water after eating or drinking something sweet (sweets but also fruit and dairy) just to really try to keep the mouth clean and prevent food and sugars sticking to his teeth through the day.

He's only started using mouthwash recently as I didn't want to until he was 6. Hopefully that will help.

The water idea is good, I will encourage him to do that.

It doesn't help that our dentist is very stretched at the moment so no one is getting a regular checkup.

My little one has awful molars. I was mortified when the dentist pointed out her cavities at our last trip. We don’t allow much sugar (I mean, I’m not that cruel that she can’t have an ice cream with friends but day today, it’s very minimal). We brush twice a day on school days & 3 times on the weekend. She uses adult toothpaste. We always make sure she rinses with water after eating. She doesn’t drink sugary drinks.

We think it’s partly come from eating raisins as a toddler. She loved them & had a small packet a day. I had no idea they were so bad for her teeth. She stopped liking them aged 3 & so hadn’t eaten them for 12 months when we saw the dentist..

But our dentist says some people just have good teeth & some unfortunately genetically do not. Her enamel is poor. So while most kids can happily eat a kids pack of raisins a day, my DD can’t. It’s caused issues.

I have rock solid teeth. My whole family do. None of us have any fillings. I’ve had 2 HG pregnancies where it’s safe to say I did not look after my teeth. I would be sick just putting the brush in my mouth so it was pointless. I used chewing gum mostly. And it’s not damaged them at all. My teeth are good as new! My husband on the other hand has a mouth full of fillings & crumbly teeth. His enamel is really poor too.

You sound like you are doing everything right OP. The best thing you can do is set good habits & role model good habits for him to take into his older years when he moves to doing them himself.

If it makes you feel better I had all sorts of probs with my baby teeth but basically no issues at all with my adult teeth! So I am sure he will be just fine!

I've just bought my children an oral be electric toothbrush! Maybe worth a try for extra cleaning power?
