Pelvic x ray 2 year old radiation exposure?

Hi everyone! Unashamedly looking for reassurance…

DD hurt her leg really badly trampolining Friday two weeks ago. She’s two (three in October). Took her straight to A&E. 3 x rays done- one on her pelvis to check hips, and two on her knee. Nothing found. Soft tissue injury diagnosed, said to come back on Monday if she still wasn’t walking properly. She wasn’t, so we went back in. Further two x rays done on her lower leg this time, all clear so got sent home again and told to wait. It’s getting a bit better now.

However, I’m now panicking about her radiation exposure from the pelvic x ray. I was too anxious thinking she’d broken her leg to ask any intelligent questions like what her exposure would be, if they had it set to child settings etc (it was taken in normal emergency department x ray) and from what I’ve read since pelvic x rays are the worst for exposure and I’ve definitely increased her risk of cancer because she’s so young.

I know I sound panicked by this! I just can’t shake the feeling that I’ve caused her long term damage. If anyone has any words of wisdom I’d be so grateful. xx

My daughter is 4 and has hsd so many pelvic xrays due to hip dysplasia. You have more radiation on a flight than from an xray. Stop panicking honestly.

@ItsSnowJokes thanks so much, that’s exactly the kind of response I needed

Do you have health anxiety op? I’m sure the radiographers knew what they were doing. My DD (now 2.10) has had numerous X-rays in her life due to hip dysplasia - as with poster above) and it didn’t even occur to me to worry about it!

I’d me more worried about the trampolining to be honest... hope she recovers soon x

I'm sorry if I sounded harsh, but my child has honestly had in excess of 15 pelvic xrays, if I hadn't let her she could have had very damaged hips. You had to do it to find out if there were any breaks.

PS. Don't let your child on any more trampolines, our surgeon hates them, he sees more injuries from trampolines than anything else.

...it would never have occurred to me even to think about this tbh.

The exposure is completely negligible. As PP say, you get more from a plane journey.

Zapx · 25/08/2021 22:16

@MindatWork yes I think I probably do Blush thanks for helping me get a grip!

@ItsSnowJokes not at all, I really value your experience. And yes, we'll be rethinking our activities!

@BuffySummersReportingforSanity thank you, it was the elevated risk for the pelvis that had me worried

It's all fine. They would have used child settings and made sure the dose was as low as possible. Legally they have lots of hoops to jump through to even be allowed to X-ray without lots of controls in place to ensure they are as safe as possible. The biggest risk will have been not having the X-ray. So don't worry.

Ds had had about 6 hip x rays bybttevtinebhe was 6 months old as he was breech, the a few mire a year later due to an unrelated injury. He’s 13 next week, sporty and so far no problem…..

@paradyning thanks so much for the reassurance! I think the stress of going to hospital got to me a bit Blush

@BikeRunSki thanks for messaging - glad to hear your DS is going so well
