Should my dd eat anything (D&V after river trip)?

My dd is 13 and since about 3pm yesterday she has vomited x 6 and had diarrhoea x 11. This was 24 hours after doing paddle boarding in a river (organised, paid etc, not just random/alone).

She last ate at 2pm yesterday.
Last puked 4am today.
Still seems to have diarrhoea.
All that she’s had today is 2 rehydration sachet drinks and water.
Should I give her anything like some dry toast or should I try to starve the bugs out until tomorrow? It seems a particularly severe D&V.

Does she want to eat? If so let her try some dry toast or dry crackers.

She doesn’t want to, no. I just wondered whether she would be ok another night not having eaten anything other than the rehydration stuff (twice today).

I wouldn’t push eating as long as she’s drinking, great if she will drink rehydration sachets.

If it continues tomorrow, I would get some advice from 111 as there can be all kinds of nasties in river water (I say that as a total non-medic).

does she fancy eating?
crackers, pretzels, a banana

fluids are way more important than food. whatever drink she fancies.

the good thing about d&v is that it's usually over quickly.

if it goes on for more than 3 days see a gp to check for giardia.

Ok thanks, she’s alright to drink another rehydration sachet but doesn’t want to eat. So we’re just going to do the sachet and hope she can sleep tonight and feel a bit better tomorrow.

As long as she's drinking then just go with what she fancies as far as food is concerned. She'll be absolutely fine not to eat at all today.
Salted crisps is a good choice carbs plus electrolytes Grin

The body can survive a surprising amount of time with no food as long as it's hydrated. If she doesn't fancy eating then that's fine, it'll take a while for her to settle. Sounds like she's been really poorly!

Flat coke is recommended by many wild swimmers to relieve water based funny tummies.

ImitationofBeing · 21/08/2021 21:56

Ready salted crisps are good, salt, fats, gentle on the tummy and not horrific to vom back up.

As mentioned - flat coke might help. Friends on mine who are serious canoeists drink milk prior to going in the river and copious amounts of cola afterwards.

QueenofBrickdon · 21/08/2021 22:03

Does she have any other symptoms?
Just thinking about Weils disease.

I really hope it isn’t that one. She doesn’t have a temperature or any of the other symptoms. Just really really bad guts, not eating and now very tired from that.

We did all drink coke directly after the paddle boarding as that’s what the instructor advised the whole group. Showered when we got home, washed hands at the place etc. Hosed wetsuits thoroughly and left them hanging out, hot washed towels, washed bags and clothes. Did everything we could to avoid this sort of thing. Me and ds are fine, just dd is ill but has now managed to go to sleep.
