Constipated baby

Hi guys,

DD is around 7.5 months old & we started weaning at 6 months. Started with veg purées and are now on 2 meals a day.

She seems to be constipated at the moment & hasnt had a dirty nappy for about 3 days - plenty of wet ones. I am wondering whether this is just part of her body getting used to eating larger quantities of solids or if I should be concerned.

She is fine within herself and eating and drinking etc. I've been offering prune puree and extremely diluted orange juice to try and get things moving along (when she has been constipated before, this has done the trick) but at the moment doesn't seem to be working. She also normally has weetabix/porridge for breakfast so plenty of fibre.

Any tips to get things moving or do I need to be ringing the doctor?

Should I take it easy on the food & offer more simple puréed veg to give her digestive system a bit of a break?

Many thanks!

Just to add, last night she managed to do the tiniest poo, but was clay like in texture - so deffo think it's constipation rather than just a new pattern of bowel movements.

Dd needed some lactulose at that age (in addition to the prunes, my god it felt like she only ate prunes then). See gp. Sooner, rather than later.

It can take some quite awhile to get used to solids...

Thanks for replying :)

With the laculose is it a case of just providing it when constipated & then stopping as soon as bowel movements become more regular?

Or is it used as a regular thing to prevent constipation?

Will have to do some reading and get on to GP tomorrow

I'd recommend the prune pouches for babies - Ella's kitchen or sainsburys own. We've used both with great success. Mix with yoghurt or porridge etc and then wait. Should take effect within 12 hours. Don't give the whole sachet!

It is pretty normal for them to get constipated when they start solids but of course it still needs addressing.

I'd stop the weetabix for a bit - insoluble fibre can be hard work for the bowels. Oats are good though :) keep up the prunes and swap out the orange juice for orange segments (or clementines or anything of that ilk). Make sure you're offering water with every meal.

If she's still struggling then speak to your GP, DS had paediatric movicol (possibly when he was a little older, hard to remember) because he was so constipated he was bleeding when he finally was pooing, poor thing.

Just to add that bananas and eggs can cause constipation as well, so if you're giving those then have a break from them for a while.

Thanks for your comments guys, we have success! Several number 2s this morning so think her system is clearing itself out.
