When to seek medical help (vomiting)

Sorry to be so clueless but it's been so long since any of us had a vomiting bug and I've forgotten what to do!

Ds (aged 8) has been vomiting since 2:30pm today. Vomited about 10 times so far, none of it in the bucket Envy - not envy. He's drunk some water but he's not really keeping much down. He seems well in himself though. He seemed quite unwell this afternoon and slept for 3 hours, then woke up and has been quite cheerful and chatty ever since. He also has rumination syndrome which tends to get worse after a vomiting bug.

I'm worried about whether he is keeping down enough water but then I think he can't be that ill if he is this cheerful and just a leakier version of his normal self.

Have you tried water on a teaspoon every 15 mins? Sips are often too big.

what is his urine output.
beware of dehydration.
if in doubt, ring 111.
good luck.

Fizzy stuff is usually easier to drink and keep down to be honest. Lemonade? When I'm vomity still water makes me vomit more! Or maybe a few ice pops?

Oh OP, commiserations. My DD is only 2 but she’s just come through a really similar thing today - thrown up 7 times in 12 hours, barely sipping anything and even that was largely coming back up, no other symptoms like rash, bad tummy etc. Just this hideous projectile vomiting like I’ve never seen before. She was also in decent spirits with it all. We’re 24 hours in and she’s stopped vomiting and feeling nauseous and is fast asleep, no restlessness.

GP said:

  • be weary of dehydration, what has come out needs to be replaced;
  • give small amounts of drink often as too much too quickly can cause more vomiting, so in our case she said teaspoons of something sweet or appealing;
  • avoid apple or orange juice because acidity will make them feel worse;
  • don’t worry about food, prioritise hydration;
  • any rash or high fever needs more medical attention;
  • in our case she said if no wet nappies by 24 hours since it started go back to GP.

She thought this was a bug and that it’d be over quickly.

Poor LOs, so hard to watch them go through it.

Sorry, I forgot I posted this Blush

He thankfully stopped puking about an hour after I posted. Woke up absolutely fine although been eating a bit less than usual. Nobody else has been ill.
