Croup- what are the chances baby didn’t catch it ?

Hey,

We were admitted to A&E last night for a different issue. I have a 10 month old LG. We were surrounded with children with croup coughing away wheezing (8 of them) the nurses come out even saying they cant believe how many have it. We were all in a tiny waiting room some were vomiting around us too because of the violent coughing.

I’m now aware it’s going to be extremely lucky if LG doesn’t catch it.

What should I look out for? How long does it take for symptoms to come out? It has really scared me seeing how terrible these children were.

Any advice if she does get it on what to do?

Thanks

Croup can't be spread or caught from another child - it's caused by a virus, cold, flu, probably Covid too. Its how the child reacts to the virus that causes croup. Some children are prone to croup, some never get it.

So your dd could have caught a virus from the other children, but there's no reason to think she should get croup from it - more likely she will just get a cold.

My ds was prone to croup and has had it maybe 8 times in his life. My dd has never had croup.

@BathroomBuffalo oh ok thank you I thought it was a specific virus that caused it. I will keep an eye on her.

Bless him it sounded horrible hearing it last night the way these children were breathing and coughing.

Yeah croup can be scary, my son always skipped the cough stage and just woke in the night with stidor, a harsh sound like he's struggling to breathe. We usually have to take him to A&E and they give him a type of steroid which helps him pretty quickly.

They also advise taking them into cool air as this can help too, so we usually go and sit on the front door step while we decide if we need to take him to hospital!

I hope your little girl stays well Smile

Oh no that sounds horrible! I would be so worried !! Did he have any other cold like symptoms beforehand??? I’ve just been googling like mad and it says a few different viruses can cause it in young children so it is likely she can get it. Something about these certain viruses make the breathing tube swell and in young children under the age of 5 it often causes croup because there’s are so small. Sad just have to wait and see I guess

Hi, sorry just seen this, been at work today!

For my son he generally doesn't have any cold symptoms before, and often none after either. He just wakes in the night with croup.

Try not to worry though, croup isn't really life threatening, and if it seems bad you get them to the hospital and the steroid (dexamethasone) sorts them out quickly.

You just don't know if you have a child prone to croup until it happens! Most likely your little girl won't be. It's so hard when they're little and you're worried about them though, I do understand!

For example: both my children are recovering from the same virus. Dd (2) got a crazy high fever, coughing with vomiting, snotty nose in the later stages, extreme lethargy, etc... ds (4 months) developed a cough and then was croupy for one night. Has since been wheezy. Dd wasn't wheezy. Same virus (likely rsv that is making the rounds or hipv 3). We know this because dd goes to nursery but I'm in may leave and ds stays with me all the time. And I don't really go anywhere!!!

Agree with all the other posters it’s caused by many different viruses but what I will disagree with is it can be life threatening my ds is often blue lighted to hospital and in resus he was very nearly ventilated and in very rare cases it can be life threatening steroids do not always work my ds often needs Adrenalin and many nebulisers.

Thanks I will definitely be calling the doctor or taking her in if it appears. She has woken up today coughing and sneezing like crazy with a slight temperature and very grouchy so I am guessing we have caught something.
