UTI in three year old boy?

BreadmanAndCake · 14/08/2021 17:57

Hiya, just looking for any ideas or if anyone has experienced this with a boy before. My son seems to be presenting with symptoms of a UTI. He has had three accidents today (he has been potty trained for over a year and this is not at all normal for him), is irritable, frequently going to the toilet and passing very small amounts of urine, and has a temperature of 38.5.

I wasn't really aware that this happened with boys and am wondering what to do about it. I'll treat the temp with calpol but he is refusing to drink much at all. I'm frequently reminding him but he still won't. I've explained that it'll help him feel better, etc etc, but he won't budge and obviously I can't force water down his throat.

I've asked if he has any pain and he pointed to the area above his genitals.

It doesn't seem bad enough for 111 so my instinct is to leave it until tomorrow and complete an E-consult if he is still showing symptoms. Has anyone got any tried and tested remedies, ways to make him drink water or any other helpful info? Thanks Smile

Yogurt, ice lollies, jelly, watermelon could all help. I'd phone 111, 3.5 is still very young.

Leftphalange · 14/08/2021 18:09

I would phone anyway for advice.

It happened to mine and he was prescribed antibiotics.

Justa47 · 14/08/2021 19:30

@BreadmanAndCake

It happens to young.
Poor boy.

As far as i am aware, UTIs in boys need further investigation. I'd call 111 as he'll need antibiotics and follow up scans etc arranged I suspect

bsquared · 14/08/2021 19:47

This is what 111 is for. Do everything @TheLovleyChebbyMcGee says for hydration, but you may need antibiotics.

UTIs are so horrible. I hope they can help him.

SpamIAm · 14/08/2021 19:48

Yes I'd call 111. UTIs in men require urgent medical attention so I'd assume that's even more true for young boys.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 14/08/2021 19:49

With boys they need to be seen as by the time they are having issues it's gone up to their kidneys IIRC. Doctor said it was standard practice to prescribe antibiotics when ds presented like yours.

toomuchfaster · 14/08/2021 19:50

Another vote for 111 here. Don't leave it overnight and definitely not til Monday. UTI in males need urgent treatment.

BreadmanAndCake · 14/08/2021 20:17

Thanks so much for all your replies, really appreciate it. Will be following up with 111 shortly

Hope he's better soon, poor wee thing!!

Poor lad - hope he’s feeling ok.

My DS had a nasty UTI (e-coli) at 3. Strangely he didn’t have any pain with weeing - it was exactly like a stomach bug, abdominal pain and vomiting with a temp. But I knew something was off with him so we went to the GP on day 2 of this, and they did a sample - the one in the surgery was clear but the one they sent to the hospital showed the infection.

The GP said they’d refer him for scans, as they do. He had amoxicillin for a week then low-dose trimethoprim for 6 months until we got the scan. This showed his kidneys were working fine but he did have a simple cyst on one of them which may or may not have been caused by the infection. He had another one at 5 which wasn’t as serious, he just had a week of trimethoprim for that.

Jet888 · 14/08/2021 21:15

My poor 3 year old boy had one too. Crying out in pain whenever he did a wee. Heartbreaking! Gp gave him antibiotics but it took a while to go. He was happier to drink more water the better he felt

TwinkleTwinkle11 · 14/08/2021 21:37

Yes I've needs anti-bi's ASAP.
As pp my 2.5 DS had one, he was on them for 10 days and currently been on trimethoprim for 4 months, waiting for his scan to come through.
He didn't have a temp but was vomiting through it.

BreadmanAndCake · 14/08/2021 21:51

Spent a long time on hold to 111 without success, had to hang up as he woke up crying out in a bit of a state, took temp again still 38.5 as he refused calpol. However he did a huge wee as I was holding him (we managed to get some weak squash into him before bedtime) so I'm reassured that he is at least not dehydrated but still concerned about his symptoms (it's really out of character for him to continually wet himself like this) and heeding the brilliant advice everyone here has given me so I'm back on hold to 111. Thanks again everyone x

@TwinkleTwinkle11 so sorry to hear that you're still waiting for scans for him, fingers crossed they get him in soon poor thing x

Thinking about it, I wonder if he's limiting his water intake to stop himself from needing to pee as much if the peeing is hurting him (if that makes any sense)

Usuallyhappycamper · 14/08/2021 22:32

I would try and get him to wee in a clean jar when he wakes up tomorrow so you have a sample. They will need to test, so you might as well have some ready. Ds had a few infections when he was still in nappies and getting him to pee on demand was nigh on impossible! We had to go for a kidney scan because the first one was when he was under 1.

paddlingon · 14/08/2021 22:43

Ds at that age had sore and swollen testes I didn't think much of it.
I booked a GP's appointment.
So told me to go straight to the hospital because an ambulance would take to long to arrive.
He had infant hydrocele which can be serious if the testes twist.

I would always take uti type issues seriously in small boys.

Mallo11 · 15/08/2021 14:05

Hope he’s ok today OP
