13 year old dizzy after exercise - get him checked out?

My 13 DS has a tendency to feel light headed at times, especially if he stands up too fast. I used to have low BP when I was younger so just assumed he was similar. We just went to the gym together, first time for 18 months, and after a 10 min run on the treadmill he went grey and said he felt like he was about to pass out. I sat him down, it lasted about 10 minutes and then he felt ok again, tho remained a bit pale tbh. WIBU to check this out with the GP? I have health anxiety so never know whether something is worthy of a call or not!

Can be hard to interpret exercise things if it's the first time in a long time, very possible he just did more than his body was expecting. If he is recurrently getting faint / dizzy with exercise specifically, would be worth getting him seen at GP.

Had he eaten beforehand?
Was he keeping hydrated?

Notaroadrunner · 11/08/2021 17:11

He needs to be drinking plenty if exercising. Would he have had a coffee before exercising? That makes me lightheaded.

I think it's fairly common - having done teenage career fairs there's usually a fainter or 2. Try not to make a big deal of it if you can; just make sure he sits down and has something to drink until it passes. If it goes on more than a couple of times have a chat with GP

I would talk to the GP yes. Not urgent but I would.

Thanks for replies. He hadn't eaten loads, and I do have to nag him to drink so will work on those 2 things and see how he goes!

I would advise going to the GP for an ecg OP.

My DS has a heart condition and one of the first questions they asked him was did he get dizzy when exercising. He even had to have a test on the treadmill with the oxygen monitor on him. As it turns out exercise doesn't affect my DS but there are plenty of kids for whom it does.

It's probably nothing whatsoever with your DS but definitely worth getting checked out just in case.

@WitchBabyWitch Hmm perhaps I will get him checked then. Do you mind me asking what condition he has? I was recently diagnosed with long QT syndrome which has made me totally paranoid about anything heart related. GP is adamant I have nothing to worry about but Im not feeling terribly reasurred. And it can be genetic I gather. Probably should have mentioned all this in the OP....but I know how I over react because of my HA so was trying not to jump to conclusions!

I agree get him checked out for heart murmur, asthma, etc. It doesn’t sound at all normal. Only other thing is would he get that way running on form ground? Some people get a type of car sick running on treadmills.

Oh I would get him checked then if you have been diagnosed with that, OP.

My DS had WPW (electrical problem that caused a racing heart) he had a procedure to fix it but since then they have found a couple of other things which hopefully won't affect him during his life but they are keeping an eye on him and he has annual check ups just in case.

Given your medical history I would definitely get your DS to the GP.

Try not to worry though, if it is anything it's better to find out and get it treated Thanks
