He is 14 btw. Has anyone’s teen had this done and had a positive experience?

You can have a TT separation at any age, it's just for babies.
our maxillo-facial surgeon said his oldest client was 89!
and because of that DS3 did have it when he was 11 - would've done it sooner but we also thought it was just for babies!

I'm not sure what's the best way to do where you are, if you are anywhere near Kingston Hospital (Kingston upon Thames) I can give you a phone number.

maybe best to go through GP or ask local hospital, or ask locally if people recommend someone or the right route to get an appointment

ffs, my first sentence!!!!
I meant it's NOT just for babies!

Lots of people get tongue tie snipped on the NHS as they get older, any oral surgery maxfacs department will do it

Why do you think he needs it doing?

LucyLatimer · 10/08/2021 18:56

Thanks. Am waiting on a call back from the dr to see what they suggest

We had nhs consultation when he was 3 or 4 and they wouldn’t do anything as it would involve general at that age.

His tongue has always been heart shaped. Speech is ok but he is a slow eater as he find swallowing difficult. We chatted on the way to the dentist today and he can’t touch his front teeth with his tongue or lick an ice cream. He feels that he is ready to have it done and that it would help him.

Kingston is doable, could you recommend your doctor?

@LucyLatimer

I'll PM you now.

3 or 4 is very different to 14. Once they are past the baby stage it's not a fun procedure, the local is uncomfortable and you have to obviously hold the tongue, lots of children obviously find that too much. It can also be painful for a couple of days afterwards. If he feels capable of having it done under local now, and wants it doing then I dont see why you cant just get a referral on the NHS. If not look for a private oral or maxfacs surgeon in your area and they will do it

DC 2 had theirs done recently in their 20s - and it wasn't as severe as your son's.
It was a fairly simple procedure done under local anaesthetic.
It was sore for a few days.

LucyLatimer · 10/08/2021 19:40

That sounds positive @mineofuselessinformation . Do you mind me asking where they had the procedure?

Bog-standard local hospital.
ENT outpatients department.
