DD 12 unexplained shoulder pain

A few days ago DD started to complain of shoulder pain. She hadn't done any sport or exercise involving upper body in days leading up to it neither had she been doing any particular movements that may have over used it. On the first day it was painful enough for her to need paracetamol however just the once and the discomfort hasn't stopped her sleeping.

That was 3 days ago and whilst it hasn't got worse it still hurts at times and doing certain movements but she isn't needing pain relief. I've checked for signs of an infection in the area and all seems fine.

Could it be growing pains? Confused

My other thought is she occasionally sleeps on her front with her arms stretched out - could it be this?

It's not an emergency by any means and my mummy senses are saying she isn't in enough discomfort to warrant GP call yet (every now and the when moving it a certain way she'll say ouch. Ok to weight bear on it) but I'm stumped for what could be causing it.

Any suggestions?

When dd had unexplained shoulder pain it turned out to be rather severe pneumonia. She kept going amazingly according to the doctor, who said with her stats she shouldn't have even been standing up.

She wasn't coughing, or had a temperature or anything that would have made me think of pneumonia. She even did 3 ballet shows and a swimming party.

Get her checked out.

My DD had neck/shoulder pain which I now believe was Covid as I came down with it 4 days later.
By the time I got my result and realised, she went on to test negative, but I'm 99% certain.

My mum recently had unexplained shoulder pain and it was pleurisy.

I'd call your GP and let them decide what they want to do.

Could be many things. Has she been carrying a bag on one shoulder? That’s a common cause of shoulder pain on one side.

Is it definitely a bone / muscle thing? You can get referred shoulder tip pain for all kinds of abdominal / chest issues (shoulder pain is often a warning for ectopic pregnancy - not suggesting that this is the cause of course, but just an example as to how bizarre the cause can be Smile). Children / young people often have trouble differentiating different types of pain and may just assume it's mechanical.
I would seek medical advice if she's in that much pain.

I've heard it can also be from trapped wind so the comment above makes sense

Wow thanks all for replying, you're very lovely. And I had no idea it could be an indicator of anything so bad!

She says she can barely feel anything now but I'm going to keep a close eye on her.

Thanks again.
