Any experience with toddlers with Covid and high fever?

Hi all,

Can someone share their experience with kids with Covid and symptoms?

My daughter tested positive for Covid three days ago and she is symptomatic with fever, cough and runny nose. The nights have been quite tough, with fever peaking at 39.5 /40 and difficulty at breathing. During the day things are better, with fever lowering down, she plays and seems ok. Then the night arrives and she is very bad again.

I would like to know your experience. How long did this last for you?

I know I am just at the end of day 3 and I need to be patient but I am quite worried as I don't know what to expect :(

Thanks in advance xx

I can only offer limited experience- partly mine and partly my neighbours.

When I had COVID in march 2020 I found (and so did many others) that the symptoms would come in waves - so that better/worse/better/worse pattern you describe is very normal. It's also exhausting.

My neighbour's dd also had COVID spring 2020, when she was 3. Her symptoms were very like your dd's and the pattern of playing by then getting ill again was exactly what she was like. It took her a good week before the fevers went, then she had diarrhoea. He cough lasted for another 20 days or so. So proper poorly but never worryingly so - didnt eat much for a few days but drank and did have energy to play, if not as much as normal.

That said, your dd is very little so if you need to get her checked out, esp if she wont drink or has trouble breathing, then dont hesitate to call 999. The paramedics will come out and assess her at home and either reassure you, or recommend a follow up with a doctor. They do this for a lot of COVID positive people - the symptoms can be quite scary even with a "normal" case.

Thanks you so much for sharing your experience @porcupineintherough. You are right, these waves are so exhausting... every time she feels fine I think we are almost over it and then we are back at square one. Reading your message and knowing that's a common pattern has reassured me.

I am in contact with the 111 and the covid department.

Let's hope she will feel better soon.

Thanks again x
