Does having an asthma attack mean you have asthma or can you have it as a one off?

Ds is 8. He was at football camp all day today and after a long day (six hours though lots of breaks etc) he had a breathless attack on the pitch and had to sit out. He is pretty fit and sporty. I wasn’t there but the coach told me at pick up which was shortly after it happened. Ds said he had trouble breathing out, he could just take breaths in, and he was quite tearful and said it was scary. This is what happened the first time I had any sign of asthma too - but I was an unfit adult who had been running for a train and mostly my asthma manifests as a cough though it is now well controlled. I never had it as a kid.
Ds is fine now but we go on holiday tomorrow so not easy to get gp appt before then though I will get one when we are back for him to be checked out. I carry salbutamol with me anyway so in an emergency he could have that. Just wondered if this is likely to be asthma though or whether such things can happen as a one off.

It could be exercise-induced asthma.
You need to speak to your GP.

viral-induced wheezing?

I don't think it's wise to assume it's asthma. It could be. But breathlessness, struggling to breathe out and no audible wheeze could also be a panic attack. He really shouldn't be using your ventolin but if he does and that's your plan, get a volumatic because a kid who has never used an inhaler before isn't going to get anything useful if he does need it.

Could you ring the NHS line?

And obviously, you need to speak to your GP.
