Heart Murmur - 4 Months

I am beside myself with worry. We took our four month old DD for her routine vaccines and were told by the ped she has a heart murmur. He said it could be an innocent murmur but he suspects VSD because "this is the age it usually shows up, and he hadn't heard the murmur before now." We were referred to a cardiologist but since we cannot get in for months, they decided to just schedule an echocardiogram in two weeks. I am so upset by this, I went in thinking we would leave with a clean bill of health. Her height and weight are above average, she does cough now and then but nothing excessive, and while she is "pale", I would not call it a blue/grey tint. Essentially, no other "symptoms".

Has anyone else experienced this?

My ds was 9 months old when the Doctor picked up a heart murmur after I took him to the surgery with a cough. He had an ECG and an Echo and was diagnosed with an aortic stenosis. It's scary as hell to be told your child has a heart condition. He had regular check ups as a baby/toddler and then yearly as he's got older and the rate of growth slows. We're lucky as he's a strapping 5ft9 13 year old and hasn't yet needed intervention. He will need his valve replaced at some point.

Modern medicine is amazing and they can do miracles. I know it's easy to say, don't worry but try and wait til the ECG when you're more likely to get answers. Once you know what you're dealing with, you can do your research. There are lots of FB support groups. If you're in the South West, Bristol has some amazing Doctors.

Hopefully it'll just be an innocent murmur. Flowers

Ds had exactly the same except I think he was 12 weeks when it was picked up. It hadn't been picked up before. We got referred to paeds and saw them 4 months later, by which point it had all but mended itself, which apparently is common.

A friend has this, surgery to correct when she was 10 years old, she lived a normal life before that and afterwards.

My DD also had a heart murmur detected when she was around 10, it is structural and not a defect.

My dh had this when he was a baby among other things. He has grown up fine. It hasn't stopped him doing anything. Try not to worry

To contrast, my youngest has a heart murmur. Was picked up at a fairly routine appointment and I really worried about it. When we saw the cardiologist he diagnosed a ‘Still’s murmur’ which basically means his heart is totally fine but a bit louder than most people’s. So whilst it could be a problem, it might not.

If you are on Facebook this group is very supportive www.facebook.com/groups/108795909224199

The wait for tests is difficult, my mum, myself and my daughter all have a congenital heart defect, all different ones!

DS has a murmur but doesn't now. All was absolutely fine and his just disappeared as he grew.

Both my DC had heart murmurs detected at around 9 months. Each time we went for an ECG and an ultrasound and with each thankfully it was declared benign and almost imperceptible. The consultant was impressed that my GP picked up either one! Fingers crossed for you OP x

I just wanted to thank you all for your thoughtful responses. The echo came back as an innocent murmur today. It means so much to have input from other moms during these stressful times. Thank you!
