Cows milk allergy experiences

Hi all

My 7 week old baby presents with severe reflux and colic and has been on medication for several weeks with only some improvement. I was advised to try a dairy free diet, which I am doing. I’m aware it can take 2-3 weeks to leave my system, however within two days I noticed a different baby; less crying and lovely content awake periods. Has anyone else experienced this?

I’ve also read that soya protein is similar to cows milk protein, but I haven’t formally been told to remove this from my diet as well. Should I also be eliminating this?

Thank you

There is a really good Facebook CMPA breast feeding page. You need to taking calcium supplements and vitamin D. You need to allow a full 6 weeks of being dairy free when breast feeding to see the full results. You can then choose to challenge it by drinking a full glass of milk but this is your choice. I didn’t and to do the milk ladder direct - you have to wait until they are a year old.

It’s up to you if you cut out soya or not. About 60% of babies with CMPA also have soya allergies. DD1 had just CMPA and with DD2 I removed dairy, soya and later coconut. I’m not convinced DD2 is allergic to dairy but she definitely is allergic to soya and coconut.

Hi my son had reflux and I tried going dairy free but was talked out of it by midwives. 2 years later he was diagnosed as dairy intolerant. It's really common. I'd suggest you don't replace the milk in your diet with soya, as it's not great for you. Oat milk and oat yogurts are probably your best bet, and unlikely to cause any reaction. Use milks that are fortified with calcium. Hope it works!
