Hello, my now 3 year old has been complaining of leg pain for about 18 months now , I’ve taken him to the gp several times to be told 1. It’s growing pains and 2. It’s in his head . He has had phases of waking up screaming he’s in so much pain and it’s becoming very stressful and concerning and nobody seems willing to help figure this out. He’s also barely been eating for months now and is losing weight . He’s thirsty all the time but never wants food , he’s nearly always got loose stools and I haven’t been given a reason for it. Has anyone got any suggestions ? ConfusedSad

It might well be growing pains, but it’s gone on for a really long time now and for such a young child that would be concerning for me, especially combined with other things he complains about. When you’ve gone to the GP have you said exactly what you’ve said here? I would be going back to the gp again.

Losing weight and always thirsty? Doesn't account for the leg pain, but the possibility of diabetes needs to be looked at urgently.

Is the pain in the joints or muscles? Is there any swelling or heat? Things to raise with the gp if present.

Yes I have , I’ve also been there again today for different reasons but once again spoke my concerns on it and asked for it to be looked into because it’s causing a lot of stress and seeing my child in so much pain is an awful feeling. I just hope it’s nothing serious as we’ve been left so long with no help.

Coeliac?

ExhaustedBeingExhausted · 26/07/2021 14:44

I’ve also asked for him to be checked for diabetes . As for swelling or heat , there is no visible sign of any problem . Both legs seem to be physically normal . He points to his shins and ankles a lot and recently started saying his back and neck are hurting a lot too. I’m full of fear of what this could be . I wish they would listen to me.

Is he hypermobile? That could cause the pain he’s indicating.

When my Ds was about 2 I noticed he stated to limp. It got gradually worse and I took him to a&e thinking he needed an X-ray. They took it very seriously (won’t scare you with why) but he was referred for potential perthes disease after the all clear with the other causes.

If you have a minor injury unit perhaps take him there stating unknown injury?

ExhaustedBeingExhausted · 26/07/2021 15:16

Not hypermobile that I’m aware off. Everything I’ve read points to Cancer of some form and it’s literally making me crazy with fear . Our local minor injuries won’t see him because he’s to young .

So if he needed an X-ray after falling, where would you take him? I’m not advocating this as a route, but I knew the GP couldn’t help with an ‘injury’ so I just had to go to a&e and say he’s limping and I think he’s injured himself but I didn’t witness it.

Has he had any blood test, OP?
I'm sorry you are dealing with this. My advice would be to ring the GP, set out everything you've said here, and say: "I am worried he could have cancer". Now, I'm NOT saying that I think he does (I have no idea, not an HCP), but your worries should be taken seriously and investigated. Wishing you and DS all the very best.
