BCG vaccine

Has anyone got their kids bcg privately? I can't really find much info on this, can anyone point me at any?

These days kids only get it if they are considered high risk eg family in a country with high TB. I suppose I'm thinking what if they want to go travelling etc? I know a lad with TB and it sounds grim.

Maybe I should get them jabbed now as the vaccine seems recommended only til 5 years...? Don't know why as we used to have it as teenagers.

TB transmission tends to be in close contact settings (eg living with someone with active disease). So the average trip even to a country with high prevalence is unlikely to be much of a transmission hazard. Hence the current advice around who is offered the vaccine within the UK. Slightly different if you are going to work/volunteer in a healthcare setting, or a homestay type trip.
You can have the BCG at any age I think, I'm sure it can be arranged privately but in the scheme of things may not be worth the hassle for most circumstances.

Thanks! Looking back I think I got the idea about it being recommended only for under 5s by misreading something - they can still have it if over 5 but would need the skin test first. So indeed maybe better to do it later only if needed.
