5yo high temp and vomiting up Calpol/Nurofen

Just wondering what you'd do in this situation? Happens all the time with DD who is 5. Her temp can get up to 40 with alot of viruses, she vomits when she has a fever, so we get stuck in a circle of her needing Calpol/Nurofen but not being able to keep it down because her temp is high. We usually have to just let the fever run it's course and try and keep her cool. Any other ideas for future?

Obvious question but has she been seen by a doctor? Do you know it's always a virus as tonsillitis often presents like that. 40 is a very high temperature.

ask at the pharmacy for paracetamol suppositories.

Tiredmumno1 · 24/07/2021 12:14

Definitely try the anal suppositories they are a godsend. They can be a tad expensive, doctors will be prescribe if you ask for them.

A child with a temperature that high needs to be seen by a doctor

imaginethemdragons · 24/07/2021 12:33

I’d do the same as you and probably would monitor rather see a Dr, only if signs of dehydration would I seek paracetamol suppositories and maybe 111 for practice nurse once over if ooh.

The only thing I would add is ice lollies, lots of ice lollies, lots of things full of fluid like watermelon from the fridge, soups.
Also obviously I give calpol first. Then after an hour or two give neurofen . Separate them, don’t give together.
Strip off, less clothes, let her play in a warming/cool bath.

Temperature is a normal & natural reaction to any infection, viral or bacterial.
I don’t lower it for any other reason than the uncomfortable feeling of being hot.
Bugs don’t thrive in excessive heat, so I let the body do its thing.
That’s my view of things.

You probably have done all this but you need to strip her off and open the windows. Keep trying with the calpol and tiny sips of cold water hope she gets better soon

Don't!!! You need to cover the child but very lightly, like only a bedsheet or something

Thanks everyone, I've spoken to doctors in the past when she's been like this and if there's no infection we're told it's viral and some children just suffer with high temps more than others. Only concerned if signs of dehydration.

I'll look into the suppositories, thank you!

Also when she's like this she sleeps in just her pull up but always wants a duvet so cover her with a sheet. We have a window open too
