My 4 day old newborn baby girl had not poo'd all day - after poo-ing around 3-4 nappies each day.

Still eating ok etc.

FTM - so worrying a bit - any advice? Xxx

Call your GP in the morning to get their advice or health visitor. So long as baby is eating and drinking as per usual and appears well then no immediate concerns.

Divineswirls · 16/07/2021 00:38

Oops ignore the eating part

At 4 days old you should be able to call the maternity ward still for advice.

I’d phone maternity at 4 days old. Or go to A&E. At this age they’d always, always want to see you.

Call the maternity ward. They will be able to assess the situation and either suggest further action, or reassure you that it is ok.

Double check with the health visitor however, when my DD was a newborn she did one huge poo literally once every 7 days (Wednesdays…like clockwork!) nobody ever seemed worried about it! X

Always check, it’s always always better to be safe than sorry with newborns! It’s very hot as well, she may be a little dehydrated which can cause constipation.

But, my DD was never a daily pooer.. she’d tend to go 48 hours & then good grief, an explosion & a half 😂 those were the days!

Are you breastfeeding? My ds2 could go a fortnight. He saw a paediatrician regularly for other problems and she thought it oddly long but not a problem. Formula fed babies poo more. The first few days their gut is changing a lot and any pattern can change. Look out for signs of dehydration as that’s a sure sign they aren’t getting enough

Is your midwife due to see you tomorrow for the day 5 blood spot test? If so speak to get tomorrow if baby is passing urine, settled and feeding well.
If she's unsettled, not feeding, has fever or not peeing or you're really worried then you need out of hours GP/A&E.
