Chicken pox in mouth

Hi, everyone, my DS has been in so much pain cuz he has got chicken pox in his mouth, his gums r red and swollen and his breath is really bad. They would bleed every time we try to brush his teeth, so we stopped doing that, today is day 6, any advice? Thank you so much.

How old is he? If 5 or older teach him to use a mouthwash and push it around his mouth/ between his teeth. It won't remove plaque like brushing but will limit the development while his mouth is so sore.
Try chloraseptic spray if the nurse or GP allow it: it has local anaesthetic so you may be able to brush.
Alternatively if he can swill mouthwash around a saltwater solution will help.

Here’s a handhold FlowersWe’ve just been through 6 weeks of chicken pox and it’s awful. Hope he’s better soon

Jujubema · 11/07/2021 21:59

@parsnipsnotsprouts Thank you.
6weeks? That's a long process.Sad

That sounds grim. My daughter had chicken pox at 5 and had spots in her mouth and down her throat as far as her tonsils. She was very miserable but found sucking on a small ice cube helped. She then had it again at 12 and this time had spots inside her private parts - floating in a cool bath made it vaguely tolerable.

Get to see a GP

I had to take mine and they controlled the timing to make sure we had no contact etc

But in meantime calpol and lollies

So awful seeing little ones poorly

Peppallama · 11/07/2021 22:16

You could try anbesol which will numb it a bit

Peppallama · 11/07/2021 22:17

I mean to smear a bit around the gums with a finger - don't gargle it or anything!

parsnipsnotsprouts · 11/07/2021 22:18

Sorry i didn’t mean it would last for 6 weeks. We had three children catch it one after another Confused

Jujubema · 11/07/2021 22:30

@Billandben444 oh, no, poor girl. Since she's had twice, I'm sure she's immune now.

@fabulous01 I did take him to GP two days ago, don't know if I should ring them again? It's so hard to get through to them sometimes.

@Peppallama thanks, will try that.

Rinsing and swishing the mouth with a teaspoon of bicarbonate soda diluted in half a glass of lukewarm water can help soothe and dry out the pox in the mouth. It’s a bit salty, but not as bad as salt water. Obviously you’ll have to deep clean the sink where the child spits (or dribbles). You can also add a handful to the bath. Oats are another anti-itch treatment that you can use in the bath. You can put some (1/2 - 1 cupful) in a stocking and it makes the bath water milky. That is very soothing also. (I’m not hippy-dippy, I promise. I’m actually a nursing student.)

DD2 had it really badly in mouth (and other places) - ice lollies helped the most

Go back to GP. My DS got very bad cp, they were on the inner rim of his eyes & he was gagging so I knew they were down his throat. I asked for an anti-viral (Zovirax liquid) and it started to turn things around quickly.

Jujubema · 13/07/2021 11:16

Thanks for all the advices.Smile
He seems a bit better today, but he has been scratching his spots on the face, really hope it wouldn't leave any scars.Sad
