Diabetes blood test vs finger prick glucose test

We are concerned that our 6yr old daughter might have diabetes, so I spoke to my doctor who referred her and booked her for a fasting blood test in a fortnight.
She has been weeing a lot and wetting the bed after being dry since she was 4 years old. It could possibly be anxiety, but we just wanted to rule out diabetes.
The weeing got worse, so I spoke to another doctor who did a finger prick glucose test and said it was normal.
Has anyone else experienced this? I'm not sure how accurate the finger prick test is for diabetes, but don't want to take her for a fasting blood test if I don't have to.

The first doctor was recommending the wrong test. That's a test for type two diabetes. If you still have concerns, you may want to keep the appointment, but in type one diabetes, sometimes the pancreas works ok overnight for a while, so it may be lower in the morning and when fasting than it is later in the day after carbohydrate.

The second doctor was correct - a finger prick glucose test is normally accurate enough to diagnose type one diabetes. Do you happen to know what the reading was? If you have any further concerns that it is diabetes, you should ask for this test to be repeated and for the GP to test urine for ketones (these can also be tested by a finger prick but I don't think GPs often have blood ketone meters). You may wish to let your practice know that the GP is following the wrong protocol. It does sound like your DD has been given the all clear by the second GP, but if she did have type one diabetes, that two week wait and incorrect test could have cost her her life.

If your child starts to smell of pear drops, becomes very lethargic, has trouble breathing or starts vomiting, please take them to A&E or call an ambulance as this is a medical emergency.

Hopefully it won't be this and the finger prick test sounds very, very reassuring. You have done well to spot that it could be type one diabetes and to pursue a diagnosis.

Thank you for replying and for your advice. It's very reassuring.
Im more than sure she hasn't got diabetes. She's a very healthy girl, she hasn't lost weight and is growing well.
I don't know what the reading was. My husband took her to the doctors as I was too emotional to deal with it at the time.
Have you had experience of this or do you have a child with diabetes?
