14yo sudden onset migraines

Hi

My dd started getting migraines for the first time 2 months ago. Since then they have become more and more frequent to the point where she's having several a week and keeps missing school. We've been back and forth to the GP who is now referring to a paediatrician.

The symptoms are all classic migraine symptoms and the GP is fairly confident that is what they are. I'm worried sick however with how often and intense they are with no obvious trigger. I was hoping to be reassured by anyone else who might have a similar experience?!

Could it be related to hormones? Have periods started recently x

Getting on the pill might help enormously.

Has had periods for 18 months. Doesn't seem to be any link to cycles

It may still be hormonal.

My DD had terrible migraines and caused her to be off from school. She was 14. After a year or two I went to the GP and discussed it and she has the hormone implant. She has been fine since. Not saying it is that but you should take her to the GP for further discussion

Does she drink a lot of fizzy diet drinks at all. The sweetener ascelfume K can be a trigger for migraines. I used to suffer badly with them. I downed loads of diet coke/Pepsi when I was at work. Read a case history about the sweetener and cut out the diet fizzy. Huge improvement! Still get migraines but nowhere near as frequent, painful or long as they used to be. But if I slip and have a diet coke etc I pay for it big time. It's also in flavoured waters.

I was wondering whether the pill would help. One of the GPs we spoke to (never get the same one) said that sometimes to start with they don't ovulate with periods then when they start actually ovulating it can cause problems with migraines

I started getting migraines around the same age and also agree with others that it could be hormonal.
I was given a medication to help prevent, I can't recall exactly what it was called but something like sanimigraine.
They did settle after a couple of years, I know not very helpful now as a couple of years is a long time when suffering with them.
Forehead rub helped, a couple of dots on the sides of temples and above the eyes.
And taking a pain killer at the very earliest signs would lessen the length, the tesco own flu tablets (own version of sudofed) works well and it's what I still use on the odd occasion I think one is starting now.
I hope you find something that helps her.

I would visit the ophthalmologist if you haven’t been - just to make sure there’s nothing going on visually.

Coffee was a trigger for me as a young person. Not the same day, but the day after having a cup. I've never gone back to it to try it again.

Mine started when I was 14 , I’m
Now 37 and they have sadly been part of my life ever since. I’ve had varying degrees of success with different meds. But have never eradicated them and they got much worse when I was pregnant .
