DD(4) bee sting on foot - is it still in? (with pic)

4 year old DD stood on a bee last week - a small bumblebee had got in her sandal while she was playing on the lawn. She screamed for a few minutes, we got the venom out, and she settled down.

A week later and it looks like this - she’s woken up to say it feels a bit sore and is very itchy. There appears to be a small dark dot which can be felt under the skin. I had noticed this but assumed it would work it’s way out - I guess with it being on her foot she’s always putting weight on it. I’ll give her some Piriton for the itch but will the ‘splinter’ come out? What is it that has been left under the skin? We’re passing a pharmacist later so I’ll call in and ask but just wanted to see if anyone had had similar!

It looks like it. I did similar (except I sat on one so that it was in my arse) and a bit of the stinger came out a week or so later. If she’s able to walk on it maybe just leave it to work it’s way out unless you think she’d be able to hold still while you attack it with tweezers.

Hard to tell if that is a sting or blood. BUT after a week I wouldn't expect there to be any mark so it's needs looking at. If her foot is still swollen needs to see GP today

Thanks for the replies - @porkincider I’ve also sat on a bee, it REALLY hurt!

The dot does feel very hard and like a foreign body, rather than blood - exactly like a splinter. At the time it happened she was screaming and wriggling (understandably) and didn’t want us to touch it so I’m wondering if we just didn’t remove the sting properly. It’s very slightly swollen but I think because she’s been scratching it, but I’ll give the GP a call when they’re open - with it being Friday (why is it always a Friday these things come up?) it’s probably best to get it seen before the weekend.

It does look like there is still something in there. You could maybe try some magnesium sulphate paste to see if that helps draw it out.

I'd be worried that it was becoming infected with that whitish lump there. Good call on the pharmacy, but it may be a GP job. Hope she's on the mend soon.

Thanks all. GP webform filled in and pics added! So useful to be able to do that!

@MrMenWizard How did you get on with GP?

MrMenWizard · 04/07/2021 16:31

Hello! I meant to update and forgot. The GP just said to leave it, as it looked like it would work its way out. She didn’t mention it after it was itching the other day. I’ve just checked now and it’s definitely closer to the skin surface, no swelling or itching since she mentioned it the other morning, so it does look like it is coming out naturally.

And we’ve cut the lawn (bar a small area we’ve left wild) - it had lots of lovely clover on which smelled glorious and the bees loved it but the DC have been playing outside and we didn’t want any more stings and squashed bees!
