My 2.5 year old has been unwell the last two days. Prescribed antibiotics over the phone by GP for suspected tonsillitis, but she has cold symptoms (cough and runny nose) on top of that. She's been running a high temperature all day, so we've been giving calpol and ibuprofen.

I took her temp at 3am and she was 40.1. Gave her more ibuprofen (last lot was around 9pm) and will check again at 4am. I've put my hand on her chest and her heart is beating so fast, I'm not sure I could even count it. I'm fretting. She's communicating still - just asked me to take her to the potty and is drinking of her own accord. So she isn't at all unresponsive.

What should be my threshold for calling 111? She's only had 1.5 doses of the antibiotics so they haven't had a chance to kick in yet, assuming this is a bacterial infection at all.

Call now. No harm in it, the worst that'll happen is they just say carry on as you are. She does sound poorly though, I hope she improves soon.

Torvi · 29/06/2021 03:54

I'd call. Better to be cautious with little ones. I hope she feels better soon.

Always call when it comes to little ones. Always better to be safe.

Hope the calpol does it’s thing and she feels better soon - and that you do too! It’s stressful when they’re poorly Flowers

Call now, it can't do any harm.

Thanks everyone. Her temperature is down to 38.2 now, so the ibuprofen seems to be working. I'm in two minds whether to call - I'm really worried but she's sleeping peacefully and I dont want to disturb her. They're such a worry!

I hope she gets better soon, it so awful when your kids are ill. My son was waiting to see a gp once but I rang them before the appointment to say his temp has gone up to 41.8 (he was 4 at the time I think) and he was breathing really fast and shallow and had a crazy heartbeat and shaking. They sent an ambulance and we got taken to hospital. I think the shaking was a febrile convulsion. We were discharged the same night thank God. Kids seem to go downhill quite fast but then perk up fast i think when they get the right meds. Hope your daughters antibiotics start working soon Flowers

I'd ring an ambulance. Like the other poster my daughter had a febrile convulsion or fit because her temp was so high. We got her checked over and were sent home later that day. It wasn't a pleasant sight as she was rolling her eyes and not responsive. Since that day anytime she's got a fever or ill we alternate between calpol and ibuprofen every 4 hours. I remember last time her temp was high, I gave her calpol and called an ambulance but when we went to the hospital her temp was still high so they gAve ibuprofen.

111 is for non emergencies and 999 is for emergencies. I'd class what you e said as an emergency.

Torvi · 29/06/2021 13:23

OP how is she now?

Changedmyname1357 · 29/06/2021 16:07

Thanks for checking in @Torvi - we deliberated for ages about whether to call 111 but eventually decided against it. Her temperature had come down, her breathing was nice and steady and she (and us, if I'm honest!) badly needed the sleep. She was much brighter this morning but is in a heap on the sofa again now. Temperature has subsided, thank goodness, but she's still feeling rotten.

I'm about to give up on the antibiotics though - none of the tricks are working and we've tried everything. I can't pin her down, screaming four times a day. Why can't they flavour it? Nightmare!

I'm glad to hear she's a little better. Can you call your GP and see if there are some nicer tasting ones that she might tolerate?
