What to give 16m old for hay fever?

My DS suffers with a constant runny nose and occasional itchy eyes due to hayfever. He also has eczema that is finally coming under control, but will flare up terribly if he sits on grass with shorts on.

I’ve contacted the GP about this, but she said they are reluctant to prescribe antihistamines for babies that young unless the symptoms become unbearable.

Is there anything OTC I can give him?

It's only piriton really that you could try as it's from age 1. It can cause drowsiness but in some children it can have the opposite effect

As pp piriton.
I'm using it atm for my 2 year old, first couple of days he was so ready his nap otherwise he's been great.
Tends to send some kids hyper though.
Keep your windows closed and don't dry their clothes outside, this has helped my DC massively the past couple of weeks.

Local honey?

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 23/06/2021 10:05

Benadryl is what ds used to have as Piriton knocked him sideways.

Actually there's a lot a boots own brand which is meant to be good, not sure on ages so could be worth popping in and asking

Local honey?
Might be a stupid question, but how does the local honey work?
Crappyfridays7 · 23/06/2021 10:14

I’d use piriton sparingly if he needs it.

Things I do as I get v v bad hayfever and find meds make me very sleepy.

Don’t dry clothes outside
Avoid perfumes/air fresheners etc
I use wipes for my face to clean pollen away and balm on my nose - a little Vaseline works too.
Close windows when people cut grass, don’t sit directly or touch grass/plants
I have a pollen dehumidifier thing in the house which has really helped and getting another one. Also wash hands regularly/avoid touching face. If eyes are itching I rinse with cold water - more difficult with a baby but cotton wool pads might soothe/ cool them if they are dry and itchy.
Really bad hayfever is horrible it makes me feel ill, I can’t wear any body spray or anything fragranced if it’s bad as that sets me off. Avoid fans, they just blow pollen and dust about.

Hopefully it’ll settle down but there is more you can give as they get older - my 10 year old has asthma/eczema and hayfever he’s on cetirizine daily. Seems to keep it at bay.

Most of the others are from age 2 so the only OTC one for that age is Piriton (chlorphenamine maleate is the generic name I think)

Thanks all, I’ll give it a go. I understand what the GP is saying about over medicating, but as a sufferer myself I know how miserable it can be.

You can always give a half dose and see if that helps.

I had an absolutely miserable childhood due to my mother not giving me antihistamines, totally miserable. People don't realise how debilitating it is.
