Loss of hearing in 11 year old daughter

Bit of a long one, sorry.

Has anyone's child had deterioration in their hearing for no apparent reason.

I contacted ENT a few months ago as dd had been complaining for a long time she couldn't hear properly and was saying her hearing was worse.
ENT made her an appointment with audiology which she attended yesterday. Her results was that her hearing has deteriorated quite a bit in both ears are now 60 below 0.
She has had glue ear in the passed but
Audiology tested for glue ear yesterday and it came back fine so glue ear is not the reason.
They have said dd needs hearing aids but she needs to see ENT as she is under 18 so they have to see her first - no idea how long this is going to take due to covid.

Has anyone else experience hearing loss in a child of similar age, if so did you find out why it had happened and did the deterioration continue x

Hi, I don't have experience of this myself but my son is deaf due to congenital cytomeglavirus (CMV), which can attack hearing as an older child.

Or perhaps she has a hereditary hearing loss that hasn't been picked up before?

As she's still a child I would hope that they would prioritise her!

My hearing loss wasn't discovered until I was 12. But she does need to be seen at an ENT clinic to find out the cause. Good luck x

A friend of mine was diagnosed with hearing loss about that age. In her case she had a history of ENT infections (nothing dramatic, but always something). There is also some familial issue, as both her brother and mother also now have hearing aides.

It stabilised rather than getting worse, and you wouldn't know if you met her, as hearing aides have get better and smaller.

Hope your daughter gets fitted soon - don't hesitate to chase it and let them know if she is struggling to hear in class etc.

My son (12) used to wear hearing aids and had his adenoids removed...all well until about 18 months ago. He has become extra sensitive to noise and is struggling to focus on one sound so makes it appear that he isn't listening. Had a hearing test with audiology about 6 weeks ago, all okay but I pushed because the test was just a normal hearing test, so about 2 weeks later I had a call from ENT and had an appointment 3 weeks ago. Anyway... apparently whatever it is that DS has is not uncommon in children his age but there is little research as to what causes it, apparently anxiety and sudden changes have been known to bring this on. Very interesting as this started round about the first lockdown...
I was pleasantly surprised that we were seen so quickly, I hope you'll get the call soon and that DD is supported!

I know someone who lost some of her hearing after a severe reaction to antibiotics as a child.

Thanks everyone.
Things are moving quickly, Audiology sent her info to Ent straight away and we got an appointment through yesterday for tomorrow - hopefully she will soon have her hearing aids x
